An-Nahar says Klitschko counted at least five injured. Le Figaro and The Independent give no toll.
A Russian drone hit the headquarters of Ukraine's security service in central Kyiv on Friday, Zelensky said. Three reports, three accounts: one carries a casualty figure and the address, one says it is the first strike on the building since 2022, one renames it Ukraine's "MI5" and frames it around US peace talks. None carries a Russian claim of responsibility.
What all three carry. A Russian drone hit the SBU headquarters in central Kyiv on Friday. Zelensky announced it, an AFP reporter saw ambulances outside, and Ukrainska Pravda published a photograph of black smoke from at least two windows.
Where they part.
| Reported by | Injured | The target | Its own line |
|---|---|---|---|
| An-Nahar (AFP) | "at least five", Mayor Vitali Klitschko | SBU main building, Volodymyrska Street | AFP could not verify the munition |
| Le Figaro | none given | the SBU headquarters, hit in daylight | first strike on it since 2022 |
| The Independent | none given | Ukraine "MI5" headquarters | places it "ahead of US peace talks" |
Whose account it is. The drone aiming at the director's own office is Zelensky's claim, on Telegram. An-Nahar says so. Le Figaro prints it in its own voice, with the first-since-2022 line, and attributes neither. The Independent does not mention it: its whole report is Zelensky's order of an "appropriate, tangible response".
The two bias readings disagree. One counted a single report stating that account in its own voice; the other counted two, reading The Independent's flat account of the strike the same way.
What the coverage does not settle. How many were hurt, and how badly: one figure, from a politician, no hospital or emergency service behind it. Nobody hurt is named. Nothing independent fixes the aim point, and no report carries a Russian claim of responsibility.
What this is about. A Russian drone hit the Kyiv headquarters of Ukraine's security service. That service is one of the Ukrainian state's most important war institutions, and the strike came days before US envoys were due in Kyiv for peace talks.
How it got here. - Ukraine became independent when the Soviet Union broke up in 1991. - In 2014 Russia annexed Crimea. Fighting then began in eastern Ukraine, in the Donbas, between Russian-backed forces and Ukraine's army. - On 24 February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. The Independent calls it a war of four and a half years. - Since then both sides have fought an air war as well as a ground war. Russia strikes Ukrainian cities with missiles and drones. Ukraine strikes targets inside Russia. The Independent and AFP both report that Russia has lately used fast, jet-powered drones, some of them in daylight.
Who the actors are. - The SBU is Ukraine's security service. It handles counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism. Since 2022 it has also run some of Ukraine's long-range operations inside Russia, including drone attacks on Russian airbases in June 2025. Oleksandr Poklad is its acting head, according to The Independent. - Volodymyr Zelensky has been Ukraine's elected president since 2019. He announced the strike and ordered a response. - Russia is the invading state. None of the reports carries a Russian statement on the strike, or any reason Russia gave for choosing this target. - The United States is trying to broker a settlement. Its envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were due in Moscow and then Kyiv. This paper reported on 5 September that Zelensky expected them on Sunday.
What is at stake. The talks. Ukraine's foreign minister, Andrii Sybiha, told The Independent that the strike was a "major escalation" that showed Moscow rejects diplomacy. That is Kyiv's reading. Russia's is not on record in anything we hold. Zelensky has promised a response and has also pledged that Ukraine will hold off airstrikes while the envoys travel. Those two commitments pull against each other.
Where it stands. The building has been hit. Kyiv's mayor gives one injury figure, and nobody has confirmed it. The US envoys were still expected. The SBU is also under a separate investigation over a dispute with the military intelligence agency, the HUR, The Independent reports.

What is being argued about
- How many were hurt: one report has a figure, from the mayor; two have none, and nobody is named.
- Whether the drone aimed at the SBU director's office — and whether that is Zelensky's claim or an established fact.
- Whether this is the first strike on the SBU headquarters since 2022. One report says so, alone, and sources it to nobody.
- What the target is called, and what it does: the SBU, Ukraine's "MI5", or the service behind deep strikes inside Russia.
