Zelensky says Witkoff and Kushner are in Kyiv on Sunday. The Independent says an envoy is 'scared' to go.
Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are due in Moscow and then Kyiv this weekend. Five reports name three different sources for that plan, two different days, and one says the trip may not happen at all.
Five reports, one weekend, no agreed itinerary. Three of them put Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Kyiv on Sunday, two name no day, and the named days differ.
| Reported by | Who announced it | The day | Whose word |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gazeta Wyborcza | Zelensky, Friday | Kyiv Sunday, Moscow first | Zelensky |
| An-Nahar | a Ukrainian official | Kyiv Sunday, first visit | that official, to AFP |
| The Independent | not said | Saturday and Sunday | Russia's TASS |
| LBCI | Trump | none | none in the text we hold |
| Al Jazeera | Zelensky | "the coming days" | his nightly address |
The scared envoy has no speaker. The Independent's live-blog headline says a Trump envoy is scared to travel, "throwing negotiations into doubt". The only text we hold under that headline says the opposite: TASS scheduling both men into Moscow and Kyiv. No envoy is named, and no other report mentions reluctance.
The two bias readings disagree. One counted two reports crediting Kyiv with announcing the trip; the other counted three. The gap is An-Nahar, which sources the date to an unnamed Ukrainian official, not to Zelensky.
Not settled. Whether the trip happens. Whether Moscow will receive them: no Kremlin statement and no US statement appears in any report we hold. Whether Zelensky's offer of a mutual pause in air strikes drew a Russian answer. Al Jazeera counts the week's dead and injured in Kyiv, in Russian-held Horlivka and inside Russia. No report names one of them.
What this is about: US President Donald Trump's two envoys may be about to visit Ukraine's capital for the first time, as part of a US push to end Russia's war on Ukraine.
How it got here
- 2014: Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Fighting then broke out in the eastern Donbas region between Ukraine's army and Russian-backed forces.
- 24 February 2022: Russia launched a full invasion of Ukraine. Moscow calls it a "special military operation". Al Jazeera calls it Europe's worst conflict since the Second World War, with thousands of civilians and hundreds of thousands of troops killed since 2022.
- September 2022: Russia said it had annexed four more Ukrainian regions, including Donetsk. Ukraine and most UN member states reject that claim. Russia still holds parts of those regions, including the city of Horlivka.
- January 2025: Trump returned to office promising to end the war. He named Steve Witkoff, a property developer, as his special envoy. His son-in-law Jared Kushner joined him. Kushner had worked on the Abraham Accords in Trump's first term.
- Since then: According to Al Jazeera, the two have travelled to Moscow several times but have never been to Kyiv. The same report says the talks stalled in recent months as the US turned to its war in the Middle East. This desk has covered that US-Iran war earlier.
Who is involved, and why
- Ukraine, led by President Volodymyr Zelensky, is defending its territory. It needs US weapons and US political support.
- Russia, led by President Vladimir Putin, holds the occupied land and wants any deal to recognise its gains.
- The United States is Ukraine's largest backer, and it also wants to broker a settlement.
What is at stake
Any deal would settle who holds the occupied land and what would stop Russia from attacking again. If there is no deal, the fighting continues into a fifth winter. The Independent warns that civilians would bear the worst of it.
Where it stands
Strikes on both sides continue. Zelensky has offered both sides a pause in air strikes while the talks take place. None of the reports we hold carries an answer from Moscow, and none confirms the trip from Washington.
The story so far
- Anadolu says Erdoğan told the UAE that Türkiye is working to end the Iran-US war. Gulf News and Shargh report a call about the region. · 5 Sep 2026
- Treasury says Golden Global moved money for the Revolutionary Guard. An-Nahar says on suspicion, IRNA says under a pretext. · 5 Sep 2026
Earlier stories The AI Times filed on this thread.
What is being argued about
- Is the trip on at all? Three reports schedule it for the weekend; one leads on an envoy too scared to travel.
- Who announced it — Zelensky himself, an unnamed Ukrainian official, or Trump.
- Has anyone in Moscow confirmed the Moscow leg? The only Russian source in the set is the TASS agency, quoted by a British paper.
- Did Zelensky's offer of a mutual halt to air strikes for the duration of the talks draw any Russian answer?
