Dagens Nyheter says 'terror crime', Wyborcza says explosives law — and De Telegraaf calls RAF Fairford 'an American air base'
Eight European papers reported arrests near RAF Fairford in England on Sunday. They agree that men were held and that a bomb robot was sent in. They disagree on how many men were held, what they are suspected of and whose base it is.
What is agreed. Police arrested men near RAF Fairford in southern England early on Sunday 27 September. Counter-terrorism police are involved. Svenska Dagbladet and De Telegraaf report that a bomb robot was sent to the vehicles.
Whose base. The papers split three ways.
| What they call it | Outlets |
|---|---|
| An American base | De Telegraaf; De Standaard's body text |
| British, used by US forces | Svenska Dagbladet, Público, Der Standard |
| British or in England, no US mention | Dagens Nyheter, Telex, Gazeta Wyborcza |
De Standaard's headline goes further: a British base "met Amerikaanse explosieven". Its own text does not repeat that, and no other report carries it.
Terror, or explosives. Dagens Nyheter says the men are suspected of "förberedelse till terrorbrott". Gazeta Wyborcza, citing Gloucestershire police, says offences under the explosives act. Telex, Público and Der Standard also frame it as explosives offences.
How many. Four outlets say five men. Four say "several". The reports giving no number were published first.
Vehicles. Svenska Dagbladet says three cars were seized. De Telegraaf, citing the Daily Mail, says three vans.
What is not settled. - Whether any explosives were found. De Telegraaf says the vans were "mogelijk" loaded. - Whether anyone has been charged, and with what. - Any link to the base's reported use for strikes on Iran. No report we hold draws one. - Only Dagens Nyheter counts the evacuation: 85 households.
What this is about. Police in England arrested several men near an air base that the United States uses. European papers do not agree on what the base is or what the men are suspected of.
How it got here. RAF Fairford is in Gloucestershire, in south-west England. It carries the name of the Royal Air Force. Since the Cold War it has been used mainly by the United States Air Force. This is a standing arrangement between London and Washington: several RAF-named stations in Britain host American units, and Britain remains the host country. Fairford's long runway has made it a base for American heavy bombers. They flew from there in the 1991 Gulf War, over Kosovo in 1999 and in the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
Svenska Dagbladet, citing the Guardian, and Público say US forces have used Fairford for attacks on Iran. No report we hold says when. None links Sunday's arrests to Iran.
Who is involved. Gazeta Wyborcza reports that Gloucestershire police made the arrests. In Britain, counter-terrorism police lead cases where a terrorist motive is suspected, even before one is established. The US military uses the base. Britain's police and courts have jurisdiction over it.
What is at stake. British law treats these as different things. An arrest is not a charge. Suspicion under explosives law is not a terrorism charge. A plot against a base hosting American bombers would raise questions for both governments about protecting shared facilities. A lesser case would not.
Where it stands. Men are in custody, vehicles have been searched and nearby homes evacuated. The reports we hold do not say whether explosives were found or whether anyone has been charged.

What is being argued about
- Whether RAF Fairford is a British base, an American base, or both
- A suspected terror offence, or suspected offences under explosives law
- Five men arrested, or 'several'
- Whether any explosives were found
