flydubai FZ1073: Jerusalem Post says 'terror hijacking', the UAE says 'altercation', Reuters says no motive found
A co-pilot stabbed his captain and the jet dived on its way from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Passengers stopped him and the plane landed in Saudi Arabia. Within a day, Israeli outlets called it terror and Netanyahu raised Iran. The UAE prosecutor asked people not to speculate. No report we hold gives a motive that investigators have established.
What happened. On Wednesday the co-pilot of flydubai flight FZ1073 stabbed the captain, Al-Monitor (Reuters) and France 24 report. Four Israeli passengers subdued him. A reserve crew landed the jet at Tabuk in Saudi Arabia.
Four words for one attack.
| Outlet | Its word |
|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | "attempted terror hijacking" |
| Ynet | "pilot-terrorist", in its own voice |
| France 24 | "apparent attempt to crash" |
| Asharq Al-Awsat, An-Nahar (citing flydubai) | "an altercation" in the cockpit |
The motive. Netanyahu told Fox News that the co-pilot "underwent Islamist radical indoctrination", Reuters reports. The same Reuters report says "No motive has been determined." An-Nahar quotes Netanyahu calling him "suicidal".
Iran. Netanyahu said Israel would know within days whether the co-pilot had links to Iran, Ynet and An-Nahar report. The Jerusalem Post leads with "whether Iran was behind it". Shargh leads with his line that any Iranian role is "not yet clear". IRNA leads with an Israeli researcher warning against blaming Iran.
Small differences. France 24 counts 174 people aboard. Reuters says "more than 170". Reuters spells the hero's name Hayun; the Jerusalem Post spells it Hayoun.
Not settled. - Why the co-pilot attacked. No investigator has said. - Whether Iran or anyone else was involved. No report we hold says so. - The co-pilot's name. No report we hold gives it. - The UAE prosecutor says the inquiry is still under way.
What this is about. A co-pilot attacked his own captain on a passenger flight from Dubai to Israel. Governments now disagree about what to call it and who, if anyone, was behind it.
How it got here. Israel and the United Arab Emirates set up full diplomatic relations in 2020 under the Abraham Accords, which the United States brokered. Direct flights followed. flydubai is a low-cost airline owned by the government of Dubai, and it flies Dubai to Tel Aviv. The route crosses Saudi airspace. Saudi Arabia has no diplomatic relations with Israel. That is why a Jerusalem Post report on how far the Saudis cooperated is news in itself.
Israel and Iran are open enemies. For years they fought a shadow conflict. It turned into direct strikes during the war in Gaza that followed the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023, and into a short open war in June 2025. So when something goes wrong on a flight to Israel, Israeli leaders look to Iran first.
The attack came days before the anniversary of 7 October, and during an Israeli election campaign. An-Nahar reports that Netanyahu said Iran and its proxies were trying to strike during "election season".
Who is involved. - Israel: its citizens were aboard. Its prime minister is publicly linking the case to radical Islam and possibly to Iran. - The UAE: the airline's home. Its federal prosecutor runs the inquiry. - Saudi Arabia: the plane came down there, at Tabuk. - Iran: named as a possible sponsor. Its press is pushing back. - India and Oman: Arutz Sheva and Ynet report that the stabbed captain is Indian and the co-pilot Omani.
What is at stake. If investigators find an Iranian link, the Gulf air routes become a new front in the Israel–Iran conflict. If they find none, the strongest early claims will have run ahead of the evidence. Either way, Israel says it will tighten checks on pilots flying into the country.
Where it stands. The UAE inquiry is open. No motive has been established.
