Fox News says "Putin-linked oligarch's lavish gift"; MSNBC says "wedding party controversy"
Four reports on one request from Republican Sen. John Curtis. Two call it a subpoena, one calls it a probe, one drops the request entirely. Two name Hunter Biden alongside Donald Trump Jr; two do not mention him.
The ask. Republican Sen. John Curtis of Utah wants the Senate Judiciary Committee to act on Donald Trump Jr. Fox News and MSNBC both call it a request for a subpoena. The Washington Post says Curtis is "asking the Judiciary Committee to probe business dealings of presidential family members" — no subpoena, and no word for the conduct.
Four names for one episode.
| Outlet | What it calls the episode | Names Hunter Biden | Word for the ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fox News | "Putin-linked oligarch's lavish gift" | Yes | subpoena |
| The Washington Post | "business dealings of presidential family members" | Yes | probe |
| MSNBC | "wedding party controversy" | No | subpoena |
| Mother Jones | a Russian oligarch who "attended" | No | none |
Who is named as acting. Fox News's headline makes Trump Jr the one things happen to — "under scrutiny from own party" — and does not name Curtis in it. MSNBC names Curtis and then rules on him: he "is asking the right questions", but "it's hardly enough". Mother Jones drops both the senator and the subpoena for "Time to Revisit Trump-Russia Collusion".
Not settled. Whether Hunter Biden is in the request. Two reports say he is; two never mention him. The gift itself rests on ProPublica reporting we do not hold — Fox News states it in a headline, Mother Jones credits ProPublica, and neither shows the original. No report we hold carries a word from Trump Jr or anyone acting for him.
What this is about. A Republican senator is asking a committee his own party controls to compel testimony from the president's eldest son.
How it got here. John Curtis represented a Utah district in the House before winning the state's Senate seat in 2024 and taking office in January 2025. He sits in a Senate where Republicans hold the majority and chair the committees. The Senate Judiciary Committee is the standing committee that oversees the Justice Department, the federal courts and judicial nominations, and it is one of the committees that can compel a witness to appear. A single senator cannot issue a subpoena; the committee does, which is why Curtis has to ask rather than act. The trigger, according to Mother Jones, is recent reporting by ProPublica — a nonprofit investigative newsroom — that a Russian oligarch attended a Trump family wedding. That report is not among the ones we hold, and no report we hold contains the original account of it.
The people in it. Donald Trump Jr is the president's eldest son. He runs the family business and holds no government office, which is what makes a congressional subpoena the instrument in question rather than an oversight hearing. Hunter Biden is the son of former president Joe Biden; his business dealings were the subject of Republican-led congressional investigation for years, he was convicted on federal gun and tax charges in 2024, and his father pardoned him that December.
What turns on it. If the committee agrees, a Republican majority compels testimony from the president's son. If it does not, the request stays a letter from one senator. Two of the four reports say the request covers Hunter Biden as well — and whether it does changes who any investigation would be of.
Where it stands. A request, and nothing more. No report we hold says the committee has agreed to anything, set a date, or that its chair has answered. None carries a response from Trump Jr.
What is being argued about
- What Curtis is actually asking the Senate Judiciary Committee to do — subpoena, or investigate
- Whether Hunter Biden is named in the same request
- Four descriptions of the same wedding gift, from "lavish gift" to "wedding party controversy"
- The ProPublica reporting the story rests on, which we do not hold
