France 24 says Iran hit "more than a dozen vessels" and oil is above $100; An-Nahar gives no ships and no price
Two reports, filed seven minutes apart on Wednesday, both say Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz and Washington has blockaded Iranian ports. They put the two blockades in a different order, and only one of them counts anything.
Two blockades, ordered differently. France 24 writes that Iran has blockaded the strait "for months" while "Washington presses a counter-blockade of Iranian ports". An-Nahar dates the sequence instead: US and Israeli strikes on 28 February, then Tehran disrupting navigation, and "in response to that" the American blockade. Both name both blockades; only An-Nahar dates the war.
| France 24 | An-Nahar | |
|---|---|---|
| Ships attacked | "more than a dozen", on Iran's word | no number |
| Oil price | "above $100 per barrel", no benchmark, no date | none — Trump says prices will fall after the midterms |
| Who acted first | not dated | US and Israeli strikes, 28 February |
| Iran's terms | not carried | five, including lifting "the blockade imposed on Yemen" and releasing "$24bn in frozen Iranian assets" |
| What a ship faces | not carried | "punitive measures", including withheld insurance |
Nobody on the ships. Neither report names a vessel, a flag, an owner or a crew, and neither counts anyone hurt at sea. No shipowner, insurer or sailor is quoted in either.
Not settled. Whether any ship was hit — the figure is Iran's own, and no shipping or naval source is quoted. What the $100 measures: no benchmark, no exchange, no date. How many Iranian ports are blockaded, and how many ships are waiting. Whether the talks Tehran reports with Oman on managing the strait are still running.
What this is about: a war between Iran on one side and the United States and Israel on the other. It is now being fought over one of the world's busiest shipping lanes for oil and gas.
How it got here
- The strait. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow channel between Iran and Oman. It links the Gulf to the open sea. Tankers carrying oil and gas from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and Iran have no other sea route out.
- The nuclear dispute. The US and Israel have long said Iran must not build a nuclear weapon. Iran says its programme is civilian. A 2015 deal limited the programme in exchange for sanctions relief. The US left that deal in 2018, during Donald Trump's first term.
- Escalation. After Hamas's attacks on Israel on 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza that followed, Israel and Iran exchanged direct strikes in 2024. In June 2025 the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites.
- This war. An-Nahar dates it to US and Israeli strikes on Iran on 28 February 2026. It says Tehran then disrupted shipping in the strait, and Washington answered by blockading Iranian ports.
Who is involved, and why
- Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, a military force separate from the regular army, runs Iran's operations at sea. It is setting the terms for ships that want to pass.
- The US under President Trump, in his second term since January 2025, is blockading Iran's ports.
- Israel is a party to the strikes. Iran's demands, as An-Nahar reports them, link the war to Lebanon, to Yemen, and to Iran's nuclear and missile programmes.
- Oman shares the strait and has often carried messages between Tehran and Washington.
What is at stake
For people who never see a tanker, the stake is the price of fuel, and of everything moved by fuel. France 24 puts oil "above $100 per barrel". Shipowners and crews bear the direct risk. So do insurers, whom Iran now threatens to cut off.
Where it stands
Iran is widening the zone it controls outside the strait. Mr Trump says the war will end after the US midterm elections in November. There are no talks, though Iran reported progress with Oman on Sunday.

What is being argued about
- Which blockade came first — Iran's closure of the strait, or Washington's blockade of Iranian ports
- Iran's claim that it attacked more than a dozen vessels in one day, carried by one report and absent from the other
- The widened no-go zone outside Hormuz, and what a ship faces for entering it uncoordinated
- An oil price above $100 a barrel, given with no benchmark and no date
