Frankfurter Allgemeine says a drone hit Kyiv's Academy of Sciences; an iDNES interview says a missile
We hold three reports from two outlets on Russian strikes in Kyiv. They describe hits on the National Academy of Sciences, its nuclear research institute and the Southern Bridge. They disagree on the weapon and the day. None says whether anyone was hurt.
What they agree on. A Russian strike hit a building of Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv this week. Two of the three reports we hold say so. The third, also from iDNES.cz, places a drone hit at the Academy's nuclear research institute. None gives a casualty figure.
Where they split. They disagree on the weapon and the timing.
| Outlet | What was hit | Weapon | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | an Academy building | "eine Drohne" (a drone) | "Anfang der Woche" (early in the week) |
| iDNES.cz, interview | the Academy building | "střela" (a missile or projectile) | "tento týden" (this week) |
| iDNES.cz, news report | the Academy's Institute for Nuclear Research | "ruský dron" (a Russian drone) | Wednesday evening |
What only one report carries. - iDNES.cz: two drone hits near a support of the Southern Bridge. It cites Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko on Telegram on Thursday. He said metro and surface transport across the bridge were halted while experts checked the structure. - Frankfurter Allgemeine: the Academy now calls for cooperation with Russia not to be resumed. - iDNES.cz's interview: Kyiv TV journalist Julija Zubčenko was working nearby. She says "Rusové útočí na naši kulturu" (the Russians are attacking our culture).
What is not settled. - Whether the hits on the Academy building and the nuclear institute were one strike or two. - Which weapon hit the Academy. No report names a source for it. - Whether anyone was hurt, and how badly the bridge was damaged. - The report on the nuclear institute gives no source. Only the bridge hits are attributed, to the mayor.
What this is about. Russian strikes on Kyiv this week hit Ukraine's main state science body and one of the capital's main bridges.
How it got here. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and backed armed separatists in eastern Ukraine. On 24 February 2022 it launched a full-scale invasion. Its push on Kyiv failed within weeks. Since then Russia has struck the capital from the air with drones and missiles. Russia says it targets military and energy sites. Ukraine says Russia hits civilian buildings. That dispute runs through every strike.
The actors. - The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was founded in 1918. It runs most of the country's state research institutes. One is the Institute for Nuclear Research in Kyiv, which works in nuclear physics and reactor research. - Vitali Klitschko has been mayor of Kyiv since 2014. He reports strike damage in the city. - The Southern Bridge crosses the Dnieper in Kyiv. It carries a metro line and road traffic between the two banks. - European science bodies froze most institutional ties with Russia after the 2022 invasion. The European Commission suspended Russian participation in EU research programmes the same year.
What is at stake. A strike at a nuclear research site raises safety questions. The reports we hold do not answer them. The Academy's call matters in Europe. It asks partners not to restore ties with Russian science, and that question will come back whenever the war ends or pauses.
Where it stands. Kyiv's mayor says experts are checking the bridge and traffic across it is halted. None of our reports gives a casualty figure, and we hold no Ukrainian or Russian outlet's account.
What is being argued about
- Was the Academy of Sciences hit by a drone or a missile?
- Were the Academy and nuclear institute hits the same attack?
- How badly was the Southern Bridge damaged?
- Should scientific cooperation with Russia resume?
