French school protests: a Greek paper says 'over 400 arrests' and 'police violence'; Frankfurter Allgemeine says about 120 injured; Le Figaro says 'excesses' needing a firm penal response
Pupils in France have blockaded schools for days over teacher shortages and run-down buildings. On Thursday the protest reached the universities and the government called a crisis meeting. Eight outlets in six countries agree on fires and a head teacher doused with petrol. They do not agree on how many were arrested, how many were hurt, or who is doing the violence.
What is agreed. Pupils are protesting over crowded classes, poor buildings and a lack of teachers, HotNews.ro, Frankfurter Allgemeine and Der Standard report. On Thursday attackers doused a lycée head with petrol and fires were set at "at least two schools", HotNews.ro reports, citing French officials. Der Standard and De Standaard carry the petrol attack too.
Where the accounts split.
| Outlet | Figure | Who is acting |
|---|---|---|
| Efimerida ton Syntakton | "over 400 arrests", no source given | police: "police violence" stated flat |
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | "rund 120 Verletzte", per the education ministry | not said |
| Le Figaro | none | the state answers "débordements" |
| Welt | none | protesters: an "Anstieg der Gewalt" |
| Politico Europe | none | politicians: "finger-pointing" |
Whose violence. One report of eight names the police as doing harm, and it gives no source. Six describe fires, attacks or escalation by protesters. De Standaard writes the arson with no actor named.
Demands or disorder. Three of eight reports say what the pupils want. Only HotNews.ro puts the demands before the violence.
What is not settled. - The arrest figure: one report, no source, nothing to confirm or contradict it. - The injury figure: one report, from the ministry, with no word on who was hurt or by whom. - Who started the fires, and whether any police violence is documented.
What this is. A national protest by French secondary-school pupils over the state of their schools, which has turned violent and is now a test for the government.
How it got here. France runs its schools centrally: the national education ministry in Paris hires and pays teachers and sets what they teach. A shortage of teachers and the condition of school buildings have been long-running complaints. Blockading a lycée, piling bins across the gate so classes cannot start, is an old form of pupil protest in France. This wave began several days ago, Der Standard reports, with pupils demanding more money and more staff. It spread to more cities, Frankfurter Allgemeine reports, and on Thursday reached the universities.
Who is involved. - The pupils and students. They want teachers, money and buildings that work, according to three of the reports. - The government. A crisis meeting sat at Matignon, the prime minister's office, Le Figaro reports. President Emmanuel Macron answered the pupils, HotNews.ro reports. - Gérald Darmanin, the justice minister. He summoned the chief prosecutors to set a firm penal response, Le Figaro reports. He was interior minister, in charge of the police, from 2020 to 2024. - Local politicians. The mayor of Saint-Denis, a suburb north of Paris, let himself be filmed with protesters, Welt reports.
What is at stake. If the government treats this as a public-order problem, the pupils' demands may drop out of sight. If it treats it as a schools problem, it will be asked for money. Macron's second and last term ends in 2027, so every party is reading the protests for the next presidential election. Politico Europe says the protests have already led to political finger-pointing.
Where it stands. Schools are still blockaded, the protest has reached universities, and prosecutors have been told to respond firmly. No outlet we hold gives a confirmed arrest count.

What is being argued about
- How many were arrested and how many hurt — and who counts
- Whether the violence is the protesters', the police's, or both
- The pupils' demands: teachers, money, school buildings
- A firm penal response versus 'police violence'
