Hijacker, terrorist or co-pilot: outlets split on the flydubai attacker, and Haaretz and the Jerusalem Post give different years for when Israel's vetting job changed hands
A crew member attacked the captain of flydubai flight 1073 to Tel Aviv with a crash axe. The Jerusalem Post calls him a hijacker and Arutz Sheva calls him a terrorist, both in their own voice. Reuters, carried by Al-Monitor, calls him the co-pilot. Israeli reports disagree on who should have screened him, and since when.
What happened. The co-pilot of flydubai flight 1073, from Dubai to Tel Aviv, attacked the captain with an emergency crash axe. The UAE prosecutor general said so, according to Reuters via Al-Monitor. France 24 says the flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia.
One man, five descriptions.
| Outlet | Word in its own voice |
|---|---|
| Al-Monitor (Reuters) | co-pilot; "terrorist attack" credited to the UAE prosecutor |
| The Jerusalem Post | "hijacker" |
| Arutz Sheva | "terrorist" |
| Ynet | "pilot-terrorist" |
| France 24 | "flightcrew member" |
Who he is. Two sources told Reuters he is Hammam al-Hammami, an Omani national. No report we hold has anyone confirming the name on the record.
Iran. Shargh cites the New York Times: one Arab and two US officials say he acted alone, with no known link to Iran. Arutz Sheva cites CBS for an initial Israeli finding of a lone attacker. Both call the findings early.
Who should have vetted him.
| Outlet | Account |
|---|---|
| Haaretz | the ministry took screening from the Shin Bet in 2021, a security source says |
| The Jerusalem Post | Netanyahu gave the ministry the job in 2025; officials say intelligence vetting is outside its remit |
| JNS | the Tax Authority checked crews only for criminal status |
Not settled. Whether he had outside ties. Which year the job moved, and whether it ever covered intelligence checks. No official has said on the record who was responsible.
This story is about a crew member who attacked the captain of a passenger jet flying to Israel, and the argument in Israel over who should have caught him first.
How it got here. The UAE and Israel set up diplomatic relations in 2020 under the Abraham Accords. Direct flights followed. flydubai, a low-cost airline owned by the Dubai government, flies the Dubai–Tel Aviv route. Foreign airlines landing in Israel bring foreign crews, and Israel runs its own checks on them. That work once sat with the Shin Bet, Israel's domestic security service. At some point it moved to the Transportation Ministry. When it moved, and how much of it, is now disputed.
On 30 September 2026, on flight 1073, the co-pilot attacked the captain with a crash axe, the UAE prosecutor general said, according to Reuters. France 24 says the plane was diverted to Saudi Arabia. The Jerusalem Post reports that a flydubai rescue flight later landed in Israel.
The actors. The UAE, whose prosecutor is investigating and whose government owns the airline. Oman, whose national the co-pilot is said to be; Oman has no diplomatic relations with Israel. Israel's government, ministries and security services, which are now trading blame. Australia, where police say they are looking into the co-pilot's "links to Australia". Iran comes into it because Iran and Israel are open enemies and fought a war in June 2025, so any attack on a flight bound for Israel raises the question. The officials quoted so far say they know of no link.
What is at stake. If the gap was in Israel's own checks, it covers every foreign crew landing at Ben Gurion airport, not only this one. LBCI reports that crews holding Lebanese and Syrian passports passed through Ben Gurion without being stopped. Ynet quotes a former senior official who says the ministry's security division is short of money and staff.
Where it stands. The investigations are at an early stage. Nobody has said on the record who was responsible.
The story so far
- The Jerusalem Post says 'hijacking', a UAE adviser says 'terrorist act', An-Nahar says 'incident', and no one has shown who, if anyone, sent the co-pilot · 2 Oct 2026
- Jerusalem Post: Iran led Netanyahu's UAE talks. Haaretz: he asked for a denial. Shargh: a 'cover-up' · 28 Sep 2026
Earlier stories The AI Times filed on this thread.
What is being argued about
- Whether to call the attacker a co-pilot, a hijacker or a terrorist
- Whether he acted alone or had ties to Iran or anyone else
- Which Israeli body was meant to vet foreign flight crews, and since when
- Whether crews with Lebanese and Syrian passports have passed Israeli checks unchallenged
