Iran says Washington is preparing to attack; Trump says "this week is no different"
Iran's central military command said on Sunday it had information that the United States, backed by regional states, was preparing to resume action, and that US bases would be hit. Hours later the president told Fox News the options were a deal, economic rot or wiping Iran out — and that the week was no different from any other. No report we hold carries an American answer to the warning.
Iran's central military command spoke first. It said on Sunday it had information that the United States, backed by some regional countries, was preparing to resume action against Iran, and that any attack would bring sustained strikes on US bases across the region — Asharq Al-Awsat, citing Iranian state media. Al-Monitor called it a warning; the Jerusalem Post's headline called it a claim and a threat.
Trump spoke hours later, to Fox News. An-Nahar quotes him saying the options are a deal, letting Iran rot economically, or wiping it out, and that the question is when. LBCI carries his line that this week is no different from any other in the Middle East, despite the warnings issued to Americans.
| Who | What they say |
|---|---|
| Iran's central command, via state media (Asharq Al-Awsat) | The US is preparing to resume action; US bases would be targets |
| Trump, on Fox News (An-Nahar, LBCI) | He is near a decision; the week is ordinary |
| Ghalibaf, via Fars (Asharq Al-Awsat) | Hormuz stays shut until Iran's conditions are met |
| Central Command (Asharq Al-Awsat) | Over a billion barrels of crude have crossed the strait |
| An Emirati outlet (Shargh) | Iran offered 5 percent enrichment and an open strait for frozen assets |
Not settled. No report we hold carries an American confirmation or denial. None establishes what is passing through Hormuz now: the Central Command figure carries no period. No official on either side confirms the offer Shargh relays. None explains why Trump cut short his weekend at Camp David.
What this is about. Whether the United States is about to attack Iran again, and who controls the sea lane that carries the Gulf's oil.
How it got here. Iran's nuclear programme has been disputed for two decades. The 2015 agreement with the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union capped Iranian enrichment in return for sanctions relief; Trump withdrew the United States from it in 2018 and reimposed sanctions, Iran later enriched beyond the agreed limits, and no talks since have restored it. The fighting is more recent. The reports we hold describe a war already under way: marchers in Tehran told the Associated Press, quoted by the Jerusalem Post, that they were ready to take up arms after months of war and a worsening economy, and Al-Monitor places Sunday's warning in a region on edge after drone and missile strikes on Saudi Arabia. Trump's own word for what he may do is resume.
Who is in it. Khatam al-Anbiya is the central headquarters of Iran's armed forces; the Revolutionary Guard and its Basij volunteer militia, who marched in Tehran, are part of them. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf is speaker of Iran's parliament and a former Guard commander; Masoud Pezeshkian has been president since 2024. US Central Command runs American forces in the Middle East from bases around the Gulf, which is why Iran's threat names them. The Strait of Hormuz, between Iran and Oman, is the only sea route out of the Gulf, and the export route for Saudi, Iraqi, Kuwaiti, Emirati and Iranian oil alike.
What is at stake. A strike would, by Iran's account, make American bases targets and the states hosting them parties to the war. A closed strait reaches everyone who buys Gulf oil. A deal, on the terms Shargh relays and nobody confirms, would trade enrichment limits and an open strait for frozen money.
Where it stands. World leaders gather at the UN General Assembly this week, and Trump says he is open to meeting Pezeshkian there.
