Israel's army calls the Ali al-Taher ridge "a sandbox"; an Al-Modon headline calls it a Hezbollah "successful withdrawal"
Israel blew up tunnels under a ridge in south Lebanon. Israeli military sources say the strike killed dozens of Hezbollah fighters. No report we hold names any of them, and none carries a word from Hezbollah.
What happened. Israel blew up the Ali al-Taher ridge in south Lebanon late on Thursday. The Jerusalem Post, Asharq Al-Awsat, Arutz Sheva and IRNA report it from the Israeli side. Al-Modon reports the blast, and what came after it, from Lebanon.
Where the accounts split.
| Question | Israeli officials, as reported | Lebanese reports we hold |
|---|---|---|
| What was under the ridge | Hezbollah's "last and most significant line of defense", the army says (Jerusalem Post) | Hezbollah plays down its importance, Al-Modon says |
| What the blast did | "Nothing more than a sandbox" (Jerusalem Post) | "A successful withdrawal and a fake Israeli victory" (Al-Modon headline) |
| The dead | "Dozens" of Hezbollah fighters, military sources tell Haaretz | No count, no names |
| Troops leaving | "We will not withdraw from Lebanon", Zamir says (IRNA) | Israel "expands the security zone" (Al-Modon headline) |
Hezbollah's own word. No report we hold carries a Hezbollah statement. Al-Modon's headline gives "Hezbollah's account", but its own text says the group "has so far stayed silent".
Iran. Arutz Sheva says in its own voice that the tunnels were "built with Iranian aid". Israeli military sources told Haaretz that Iranian forces were not in the area.
What is not settled. - How many died, and who. The one figure comes from one side. No one is named. - Whether Hezbollah fighters left the ridge before the blast. - Whether Israeli troops stay. Haaretz's sources tie a pullout to diplomatic talks; Zamir rules it out. - What LBCI saw near the ridge: we could not read its report.
What this is about. Israel and Hezbollah, the armed Lebanese movement, are fighting a ground war in south Lebanon. This story is about one hill in that war.
How it got here. - 1982: Israel invaded Lebanon. Hezbollah formed during that occupation, with Iran's help. Iran has funded and armed it ever since. - 1985–2000: Israel held a strip of south Lebanon that it called a security zone. Beaufort castle, next to the Ali al-Taher ridge, was one of its positions. Israel withdrew in 2000. - 2006: Israel and Hezbollah fought a war that lasted 34 days. UN Security Council Resolution 1701 ended it. The resolution says no armed force except the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers should operate south of the Litani river. Hezbollah kept its weapons. - 8 October 2023: Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October, and the next day Hezbollah began firing into northern Israel in support of Gaza. Israel fired back. People on both sides of the border fled their homes. - Autumn 2024: Israel killed Hezbollah's leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and sent troops into Lebanon. A ceasefire brokered by the US and France began on 27 November 2024. Israeli troops stayed at several points inside Lebanon, and each side accused the other of breaking the truce. - September 2026: The ground fighting is back. On 4 September Israel's military said it had taken the Ali al-Taher ridge. Late on Thursday 10 September it blew up the tunnels under the ridge.
Who is involved. - Israel's government and army say they are protecting towns in northern Israel. - Hezbollah is also a political party with seats in Lebanon's parliament. - Lebanon's government and army do not control Hezbollah's weapons. In 2025 the government pledged to bring all weapons under state control. - Iran is Hezbollah's main backer. Earlier this month, our reports carried Israeli leaders threatening Iran directly.
What is at stake. The main question is whether Israel keeps troops in Lebanon. IRNA reports that Israel's army chief, Eyal Zamir, says they will stay in a buffer zone inside Lebanon. Israeli military sources told Haaretz that a withdrawal depends on diplomatic talks. Al-Modon reports that people are leaving the south again.
Where it stands. Israel says it is ready to strike again. The Israeli army is preparing for Hezbollah to hit back. Hezbollah has not spoken publicly.
