Ynet has Netanyahu "very close" to deciding the regime in Iran; LBCI has him "committed to bringing down the terror regime"
Three reports on one appearance on the Hermon summit, on Syrian ground Israel holds. Two are a headline and nothing else. None carries an Iranian or a Syrian reply.
The appearance. On 9 September the Israeli prime minister spoke from the Hermon summit, inside Syria. Three reports carry the remark. Two of them are a headline with no body beneath it.
Where they differ.
| Outlet | The pledge, as published | Sourced to |
|---|---|---|
| Ynet (Hebrew) | Reports he said Israel is committed to defeating the regime in Iran, and quotes him: "We will do it, we know the whole axis will finally fall." Its headline says he claims Israel is "very close to deciding the outcome of the regime in Iran" | its own reporting, with the hilltop named as being in Syria |
| LBCI | "We will not allow any army to position itself on our borders, and we are committed to bringing down the terror regime in Iran" | its own headline; no body text |
| An-Nahar | "Iran's axis will fall for good, we are committed to that and we will do it" | "Israeli media", not a reporter present; no body text |
One word apart. Ynet's Hebrew bars any terror army from Israel's border. LBCI's headline bars any army. The two sentences say different things about regular armies. An-Nahar does not carry the line at all.
Not settled. Only Ynet carries "very close", and nothing we hold contradicts it — one account is not a confirmed one. No Iranian, Syrian or Lebanese response is quoted in any of the three. None says who else stood on the summit, or since when Israeli forces have held it, and none quotes anyone but the prime minister.
What this is about. Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, stood on Syrian ground that Israeli troops hold. From there he said Israel is committed to bringing down Iran's government.
How it got here. - 1967 and 1981. Israel took the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 war and annexed it in 1981. Most states still treat it as occupied Syrian land. The United States recognised Israeli sovereignty in 2019. - 1974. A disengagement agreement set up a buffer zone between the two armies, patrolled by the UN. Part of Mount Hermon lies inside it. - Since 1979. The Islamic Republic of Iran does not recognise Israel. It has armed and funded allied groups: Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza, militias in Iraq and Syria, and the Houthis in Yemen. Israel calls this network Iran's "axis". - 7 October 2023. Hamas led an attack on southern Israel. Israel's war in Gaza followed, and the fighting spread to Lebanon, Yemen and Iran. - 2024. Iran and Israel struck each other's territory directly for the first time, in April and again in October. - December 2024. Bashar al-Assad's government in Syria fell. Israeli troops moved into the buffer zone and took the Syrian summit of Mount Hermon. - June 2025. Israel and Iran fought a twelve-day war. The United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. - This month. Our earlier coverage carried Israeli ground fighting in south Lebanon. It also carried a US drone that Iran's Shargh says was destroyed near the Strait of Hormuz, and fighting between Saudi Arabia and the authorities in Sanaa.
Who is involved. - Israel's government says Iran and its allies threaten it. - Iran's government and Revolutionary Guard back the groups on Israel's borders. - Syria's transitional government has called for Israeli troops to leave its territory. - Lebanon is where Hezbollah and the Israeli army are fighting.
What is at stake. Stopping attacks is one aim. Ending a government is a larger one. How far Israel will go against Iran decides how wide and how long this war runs.
Where it stands. We hold three reports of the remark, and none carries a reply from Iran, Syria or Lebanon. We cannot yet say whether the words mark a new policy.
The story so far
- LBCI and An-Nahar lead on "hundreds detained"; Al-Monitor on operations "increasingly sustained and entrenched" · 8 Sep 2026
- Shargh says a US drone was destroyed "over the Strait of Hormuz"; LBCI, citing Reuters, says over Bandar Abbas, and no American confirmation · 8 Sep 2026
- Riyadh says 73 civilians wounded; the parliament in Sanaa condemns "Saudi crimes" · 8 Sep 2026
- Israel's military says it took the Ali Taher Ridge. The one Lebanese account we hold is two days older and names no ridge. · 4 Sep 2026

What is being argued about
- What Netanyahu pledged about the Iranian government from the Hermon summit
- Whether he said Israel is "very close" to it, and who reports that he did
- Any army on Israel's border, or any terror army — one word, two meanings
- That the appearance happened on Syrian ground, and that nobody on the other end is quoted
