Jerusalem Post says Katz threatened Iran's energy sites; Shargh says they "may be" on the target list
Two reports carry one Rosh Hashanah message from Israel's defence minister. One calls him defence minister and gives its body line to his greeting to Iranian Jews; the other calls him the war minister of the Zionist regime and carries only the warning. Neither quotes anyone in Iran answering.
The one thing both carry. Israel Katz put Iran's energy infrastructure on a target list in a message for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish new year, on 10 September 2026. Two reports say so, and they are the only two we hold. Everything else about the message differs.
What he is called. The Jerusalem Post writes "Defense Minister Israel Katz". Shargh, in Tehran, writes "the war minister of the Zionist regime" — in the report's own voice, not inside a quotation.
| The Jerusalem Post (Israel) | Shargh (Iran) | |
|---|---|---|
| The man | Defence Minister Israel Katz | war minister of the Zionist regime |
| The threat | attacks on Iranian energy infrastructure | vital energy facilities "may be" put on the target list |
| A condition attached | not carried | any attack from Tehran "will meet a severe response" |
| Greeting to Iranian Jews | carried: they are part of "a glorious Jewish history" | not carried |
| An Iranian reply | none | none |
Hedged one way, flat the other. Shargh states the response as certain and softens the energy target to a possibility. The Jerusalem Post states the threat outright and does not carry the condition.
Not settled. Whether the threat was conditional on an Iranian attack rests on one report and is contradicted by none. So does the greeting. Neither report names a plant, a field, a refinery or a city. We hold no Iranian government response.
What this is about. Israel's defence minister said in a Jewish new-year message that Iran's energy installations could be attacked. One Israeli report and one Iranian report carry it.
How it got here. Iran and Israel have been adversaries since Iran's revolution of 1979. Iran does not recognise Israel, and Iranian official language calls it "the Zionist regime" — which is why the two reports do not even use the same word for the same man's job.
Two strands run through the quarrel. The first is Iran's nuclear programme. Israel says it is aimed at a bomb; Iran says it is civilian. A 2015 agreement between Iran and the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China capped Iranian enrichment in return for sanctions relief; the United States left it in 2018 and restored sanctions, and Iran expanded enrichment afterwards.
The second is the armed movements Iran backs around Israel — Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Palestine. After the attacks of 7 October 2023 and the Gaza war that followed, those fronts opened together, and in 2024 Israel and Iran struck each other's territory directly. The exchanges have not stopped since. In the ten days before this message we filed on Israel's military claiming ground in south Lebanon, on rival accounts of an American drone brought down near the Strait of Hormuz — the channel at the mouth of the Gulf through which Gulf oil leaves — and on Netanyahu quoted in Israeli and Lebanese outlets about the future of Iran's government.
Who is in it. Israel Katz runs Israel's defence ministry, which commands its armed forces. The Jerusalem Post is an Israeli English-language daily. Shargh is a daily published in Tehran.
What is at stake. Energy sites are where Iran earns its foreign currency and fuels itself. Naming them as targets moves the threat from military installations to the economy a population lives on.
Where it stands. The message was issued on 10 September 2026. Neither report names a site. We hold no Iranian government reply.
