Jerusalem Post report sees a US–Iran 'diplomatic stalemate'; Araghchi tells Iran's cabinet it holds a 'privileged position'
Qatar has passed Washington's reply on a seven-day plan to Iran. A report carried by the Jerusalem Post says the talks are stuck and fighting may resume after the US midterm elections. Iran's foreign minister says Iran now holds a 'privileged position'. What the plan says rests on one unnamed official.
What happened. Qatari mediators gave Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, Washington's response to a seven-day trust-building plan. An official briefed on the talks told Reuters this, as carried by Asharq Al-Awsat. Araghchi was to discuss it in Tehran on Wednesday.
What the plan is for. The same official says it aims to return to an enhanced version of a US–Iran memorandum signed in June. The main dispute, the official says, is sequencing: the order of the steps.
Two readings of the same week.
| Outlet | Says the talks are | Whose words |
|---|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | a 'diplomatic stalemate'; fighting 'may' resume after the midterms | an unnamed report |
| Shargh (news) | going well: Iran has 'a privileged position' | Araghchi, to the cabinet |
| Shargh (analysis) | a war of attrition, 'no end imaginable' | the paper's own voice |
| Asharq Al-Awsat | disputed over sequencing | an unnamed official |
Each capital, on the record. Trump says Iran is doing "very poorly", Asharq Al-Awsat reports. Araghchi says European, Arab and Asian states showed "intense eagerness" to meet Iran, Shargh reports via ISNA. No other report we hold checks either claim.
What is not settled. - The plan's terms. Both reports on sequencing rest on the same unnamed official. That is one account, not two. - Who wrote the 'stalemate' report. The Jerusalem Post text we hold does not say. - What Iran's cabinet decided. Shargh does not report a decision. - Qatar and the White House. We hold no statement from either on the plan.
What this is about. The United States and Iran are at war, and Qatar is carrying messages between them about a plan to stop it.
How it got here. The two countries have had no diplomatic relations since Iran's 1979 revolution and the seizure of the US embassy in Tehran. Since then the quarrel has centred on Iran's nuclear programme. In 2015 Iran agreed to limit that programme in exchange for sanctions relief. It signed the deal with the US, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China. Donald Trump took the US out of the deal in 2018, in his first term, and reimposed sanctions. Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza followed. After that, Israel and Iran moved from a shadow conflict to direct strikes. In June 2025 Israel bombed Iran for twelve days and the US struck Iranian nuclear sites. The reports we hold describe an open US–Iran war this year and a US–Iran memorandum signed in June. They do not give the date the fighting began.
The actors. - The United States, under President Trump, wants limits on Iran's nuclear work and its reach in the region. It holds sanctions as leverage. - Iran is led by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with an elected president, Masoud Pezeshkian. Abbas Araghchi has been foreign minister since 2024 and leads the indirect talks. - Qatar hosts a large US air base and keeps working ties with Tehran. That is why both sides use it as a go-between. - Israel is Iran's main enemy in the region and a US ally. How the talks go shapes its own options.
What is at stake. A deal could end the fighting and ease sanctions. Without one, the war could go on or widen. Oil prices move with each signal: Asharq Al-Awsat reports that oil rose after Trump denied he would ease sanctions.
Where it stands. Iran has Washington's reply and is weighing it. The US midterm elections fall on 3 November 2026. A report carried by the Jerusalem Post says fighting may resume after them.

What is being argued about
- Stalled or moving? A report carried by the Jerusalem Post says stalled. Araghchi says Iran is in a strong position.
- Sequencing, meaning the order of the steps. It is named as the main dispute by one unnamed official, carried by two outlets.
- Each side's leader, on the record: Trump says Iran is doing 'very poorly'. Araghchi says the world shows Iran 'special respect'.
- The Jerusalem Post headline predicts a return to fighting. It hedges with 'may' and credits a report it does not name.
