Jerusalem Post says the US 'refuses to intervene' in Yemen; An-Nahar and LBCI quote Rubio on a 'binding' pact with Riyadh
Yemen's government launched 'Yemen Dawn' on 5 October to retake Sanaa from the Houthis, with Saudi-led air cover. On the same day, outlets disagreed on whether Washington is standing back. None of the reports we hold gives a count of the dead.
The offensive. On Monday Rashad al-Alimi, who chairs Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, announced an operation to retake Sanaa and end Houthi rule, Asharq Al-Awsat reports. The Saudi-led coalition says it is giving air cover.
Washington: out, or bound? The reports split.
| Outlet | What it says about the US |
|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post (analysis) | Saudi Arabia turns to Pakistan and Turkey "as US refuses to intervene" |
| An-Nahar | Rubio: the US has a binding security agreement with Saudi Arabia and intends to honour it |
| LBCI | Same Rubio remark, in its headline |
Neither Lebanese report has Rubio promising military action. Neither says what the pact requires in Yemen.
Bab al-Mandab. An-Nahar's headline says the government "announces control" of the strait. Its own text says only that an attack on Sanaa began, "without any further detail". Asharq Al-Awsat quotes the coalition spokesman, Turki al-Maliki, saying its air force is "securing" the strait.
The figures are the coalition's. 100 jets, the coalition says, in three reports. 324 "high-value" targets destroyed, it says, in one. Each outlet attributes them.
What is not settled - Who holds Bab al-Mandab. There is no Houthi or independent account. - How many people have been killed or wounded. None of the 9 reports gives a figure from any side. - What the Houthis say. No report quotes them. - What the US-Saudi pact commits Washington to doing.
What this is about. A new offensive by Yemen's internationally recognised government to retake the capital, Sanaa, from the Houthis, and whether the United States will be drawn in.
How it got here. The Houthis, a Zaydi Shia movement from Yemen's far north, seized Sanaa in September 2014 and pushed the government south. In March 2015 Saudi Arabia led a coalition of Arab states into the war to restore that government. The front lines largely froze after a UN-brokered truce in April 2022. That month the president handed power to a Presidential Leadership Council, now chaired by Rashad al-Alimi and based in Aden.
After the war in Gaza began in October 2023, the Houthis attacked shipping in the Red Sea, saying they acted in solidarity with Palestinians. The United States and Britain struck Houthi targets in 2024. The US ran a wider air campaign in 2025, then agreed a truce with the Houthis that May.
The actors. The Houthis govern Sanaa and most of Yemen's population. Iran is their main foreign ally. How far it arms them is disputed, and Tehran denies directing them. Saudi Arabia backs the government and leads the coalition. The United States is a long-standing security partner of Riyadh.
What is at stake. Bab al-Mandab is the narrow strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. Ships between the Suez Canal and the Indian Ocean must pass through it. Whoever controls its Yemeni shore can threaten that trade. If the offensive succeeds, the Houthis lose the capital and the coast. If it stalls, the war that the 2022 truce paused is back on.
Where it stands. Haaretz reports that the offensive followed a Houthi drone and missile strike on a Saudi Aramco facility on Saturday. The government says the operation has begun. None of the reports we hold independently confirms what it has taken.

What is being argued about
- Whether the US is refusing to act or is bound by a pact with Riyadh
- Whether the government holds Bab al-Mandab or the coalition is only 'securing' it
- The coalition's own figures: 100 jets, 324 targets
- No casualty figure and no Houthi voice in any report
