Kasparov warned of Russian plot: Welt names US services, Libération adds Lithuania's
Garry Kasparov says security services told him his life is in danger. Three European papers carry his account. They differ on who warned him, and only one calls it escalation. No security service is quoted.
What we hold. Three reports from 1 October, each only an opening paragraph. All three rest on Kasparov's own account. None quotes a security service. None quotes a reply from Moscow.
Who warned him. The papers give three answers.
| Outlet | Who warned him | Who else | Source given |
|---|---|---|---|
| Libération | US and Lithuanian services | Ivan Tyutrin, a supporter | his social media posts |
| Welt | US services | — | "nach eigenen Angaben" (his own account) |
| De Standaard | not named in what we hold | — | his words: "Mijn leven is in gevaar" |
A list, or a plot. Welt's headline says Kasparov is said to be on a "Liste von Attentatszielen", a list of assassination targets. It hedges with "soll" ("is said to"). No other report mentions a list.
Escalation, says Welt. Welt adds a line of its own: "Es wäre eine neue Stufe russischer Eskalation" (it would be a new stage of Russian escalation). It names no one who holds that view. Neither of the other reports makes the claim.
What is not settled
- Whether any US or Lithuanian agency confirms the warning. No report quotes one.
- Whether Lithuania was involved. Only Libération says so.
- What the threat is: a list, a plot, or a general warning.
- How Russia responds. We hold no report with a Russian reply.
- What De Standaard's full article says. We hold only its headline and a standard line.
What this is about. Garry Kasparov is a Russian critic of Vladimir Putin who lives in exile. He says Western security services warned him that Russia plans to kill him.
How it got here. Kasparov was world chess champion from 1985 to 2000. After he retired he went into opposition politics against Putin, who has led Russia as president or prime minister since 1999. Kasparov left Russia in 2013 and has campaigned against the Kremlin from abroad ever since. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then Moscow has added many exiled critics to its lists of foreign agents, extremists and terrorists. Kasparov is one of them. Many exiles settled in the Baltic states and in western Europe. Lithuania is an EU and NATO member that borders Belarus and Russia's Kaliningrad region. It hosts a large community of Russian exiles in Vilnius. In March 2024 Leonid Volkov, an aide to the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny, was attacked outside his home there. Lithuanian authorities blamed Russian services. Moscow denies directing attacks on its critics abroad.
The actors. Kasparov makes the claim. Libération names a second man who was warned with him, Ivan Tyutrin, one of his supporters. The United States and Lithuania are the countries whose services the reports name. Russia is the alleged author of the plot. It is not quoted.
What is at stake. If a state service confirms a plot, it adds to European governments' accusations of Russian operations on their soil. If nothing is confirmed, the story remains one man's account.
Where it stands. On 1 October Kasparov made the warning public. Papers in Germany, France and Belgium carried it. In the reports we hold, no government has confirmed it.
What is being argued about
- Which security services warned Kasparov: US only, or US and Lithuanian
- Whether a target list exists, on Kasparov's word alone
- Welt's own unattributed judgement that it would be escalation
- A second man warned, Ivan Tyutrin, carried by Libération only
