Kyiv Post says a Russian drone hit a Kyiv–Warsaw train; Russia's foreign ministry calls the reports “cheap PR”
One Ukrainian report says a Russian drone struck a passenger train near Poland and that all 206 people on it got off safely. Six Russian reports carry the foreign ministry's reply, which dismisses the reports of a strike. None of those six says what hit the train.
Kyiv Post's account. A Russian drone struck a Kyiv–Warsaw passenger train near Ukraine's border with Poland, Kyiv Post says. It says all 206 passengers were evacuated safely. It names no source for who fired. It says unnamed Polish commentators see Moscow as more willing to risk harm to NATO citizens.
Moscow's account. Foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova calls “insinuations about a Russian strike” on the train “cheap PR”, Regnum reports. Interfax quotes her saying “the Zelensky regime” uses Western “political tourists” as a “live shield” for “its military trains”. None of the reports we hold has her saying what hit the train.

Poland. Ukrainska Pravda says Poland is adding guards and building new observation posts at its crossings with Ukraine “after drone attacks”. Its text names no attacker and does not mention the train.
What is not settled - What hit the train. Only one report names a cause. - Whether anyone was hurt. The figure of 206 appears in one report only. - Which Western politicians were on or near the train. No report we hold names them. - What Zakharova said was struck. Regnum's quote of her breaks off in the middle of a word. - None of the reports we hold quotes a Ukrainian or Polish official on the strike.
What this is about. A rail line that carries Western visitors in and out of Ukraine was hit near the Polish border. Russia denies it aimed at the visitors.
How it got here. - 2014: Russia annexed Crimea, and fighting began in eastern Ukraine's Donbas. That is when the war began. - February 2022: Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Moscow calls it a "special military operation". Ukraine and most Western governments call it a war of aggression. - Since 2022: Ukraine's airspace has been closed to civilian flights. Presidents, ministers and envoys travel to Kyiv by train, mostly through Poland. - September 2025: Drones entered Polish airspace during a Russian attack on Ukraine, and NATO aircraft shot some down. Poland asked its allies for formal talks. Since then, drones near the border have been a NATO question as well as a Ukrainian one. - Night of 12–13 September 2026: Ukrainska Pravda reports that a drone hit a truck near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk crossing. It reports that a strike drone hit a locomotive of Ukraine's state railway 2 km from the Polish border. It says the railway does not rule out that the target was a train carrying foreign guests, which had left on that route shortly before.
Who is involved. - Ukraine runs the railway. It depends on the line for diplomacy and aid. - Russia, through foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, rejects the claim that it targeted the visitors. Vedomosti reports her saying Kyiv uses Western figures as a "live shield". - Poland is a NATO and EU member and the main route for Western aid into Ukraine. Its defence minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, is strengthening guard at the border crossings, Ukrainska Pravda reports. - The visitors. Vedomosti says media reports put former UK prime minister Boris Johnson and former CIA director David Petraeus aboard. We hold no report that confirms this.
What is at stake. A strike that harms citizens of NATO countries, or lands on NATO soil, raises pressure on the alliance to respond. If visitors see the rail route as unsafe, Kyiv loses its main link to the governments that arm and fund it.
Where it stands. No report we hold gives a finding from Ukrainian, Polish or independent investigators on what hit the train or what it was aimed at.
