Le Figaro says Putin ordered a three-day halt on Kyiv. NOS says both presidents agreed one, with no end date.
Witkoff and Kushner saw Putin at the Kremlin on Saturday. Four of the eight reports we hold on the day carry a pause in strikes on the two capitals, and no two describe it the same way: one has Putin ordering it, one has both presidents agreeing it, two have it happening with nobody named. The other four do not mention a pause at all.
The meeting. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner saw Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Saturday. Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov said the Americans brought "a number of ideas" and called the talks "extremely frank" (Le Figaro). RIA, quoted by iDNES, says it ended after about three hours.
The pause. Four of the eight reports mention one.
| Reported by | Who stopped it | How long | Sourced to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Le Figaro | Putin ordered it | three days from midnight | Peskov, via TASS |
| NOS | both presidents pledged it | as long as the talks run | not stated |
| Digi24 | nobody named | three days, in the headline | body: Putin says Moscow did not strike Kyiv |
| Telex | nobody named | three days | Witkoff, thanking for it |
Under the pause. Le Figaro alone carries anyone killed: four dead and five wounded at Kamianske, in central-eastern Ukraine, that morning, the regional administration head Oleksandr Ganzha says. It also has Zelensky saying Russian strikes hit both Kyiv airports overnight — before the midnight the order runs from.
Our two blind readings differ. One counted two reports carrying anyone killed or hurt; the other, one carrying anyone killed. The gap is the German liveblog's three wounded — hurt in a gunfight between two Ukrainian services, not at the front.
Not settled. Whether either side accepted the other's version. Le Figaro says Moscow had not answered Zelensky's offer; the iDNES headline says Russia refused a wider ceasefire, and the sentence under it does not. No report we hold confirms Kyiv went unstruck — the only source is Putin.
What this is about. The United States is trying to broker an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine. This weekend its two negotiators went to Moscow, and then on to Kyiv for the first time.
How it got here. - 2014: Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Fighting began in the eastern Donbas region between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists. - February 2022: Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Moscow gives its reasons as security and NATO's expansion. Kyiv and most European governments call it a war of conquest. - September 2022: Russia declared four Ukrainian regions its own. Ukraine and most of the world do not recognise that claim. - Early 2025: Donald Trump returned to the White House. Le Figaro says the rounds of talks he has launched since then have produced no concrete breakthrough.
Reuters, quoted by HotNews, calls it the bloodiest war in Europe since the Second World War. It is now four and a half years old.
Who is involved, and why. - Russia, under President Vladimir Putin. Russia holds a large part of Ukraine's south and east. - Ukraine, under President Volodymyr Zelensky. Ukraine is defending its territory and is a candidate to join the European Union. - The United States. Steve Witkoff is Trump's special envoy. Jared Kushner is Trump's son-in-law. They are acting as mediators, not as a party to the war. - The European Union. It has imposed sanctions on Russia and funds and arms Ukraine. It is not at this table, but any settlement will fall on its borders, its budget and its sanctions.
What is at stake. Borders, above all. HotNews reports that the Kremlin calls its position "unshakeable": Ukraine must give up all four regions Russia claims and drop its plan to join NATO. Trump would not say whether he thinks Ukraine should give up land. A deal on those terms would redraw a European border by force. Without a deal, the war goes on.
Where it stands. No agreement has been announced. Both sides have made some kind of promise not to strike each other's capital while the envoys travel. The reports we hold do not agree on what that promise is. The envoys were due in Kyiv on Sunday.
What is being argued about
- Who stopped the shooting: one man's order, or something both presidents agreed.
- How long it lasts and from when — three reports say three days, one says as long as the talks run, and only one names the hour it starts.
- Whether Russia refused the wider ceasefire Ukraine proposed: one headline says so, and the text under it does not.
- Whether Kyiv was struck on Saturday — the only source for the denial is Putin himself.
