Libération reports an AI channel from Xi's Washington visit; The Independent writes of "everything MAGA didn't need"
Xi Jinping is on a three-day state visit to the White House. We hold four reports on it, and each tells a different story. One says what the two leaders agreed. Two are about American politics. One says China opposed the US at the UN on the same day.
What was agreed. Only Libération says. It reports that the two governments open "un canal de communication" (a communication channel) on artificial intelligence. It says the leaders discussed AI, trade and "la guerre en Iran" (the war in Iran), and "confirmed that they would meet again this year". No other report we hold carries any of this.
What the rest lead with. The Independent filed twice. One report is about the White House press pool: Trump told reporters "we appreciate the fair coverage" at tea with Xi and the two first ladies. The other is a signed opinion piece by Eric Garcia. It calls the visit "everything MAGA didn't need", with a midterm coming "amid high gas prices and a backlash to AI".
| Outlet | Leads with | Says what was agreed? |
|---|---|---|
| Libération | AI channel, a further meeting | Yes |
| The Independent | Trump praising press coverage | No |
| The Independent (opinion) | Cost to Republicans at home | No |
| Reuters | China opposing the US at the UN | No |
The same day at the UN. A Reuters headline says China "pushes back against US on Iran and Cuba" in a UN speech. We hold only the headline. We do not know who spoke or what was said.
What is not settled - The AI channel and the next meeting rest on one report, and we hold only its opening lines. - None of the four reports quotes Xi. - We hold no Chinese outlet's account of the visit.
What this is about: China's president is making a state visit to the United States during a war involving Iran, and the reports disagree on what the visit was for.
How it got here. The United States and China are the world's two largest economies. They have been rivals over trade and technology for about a decade. In 2018, during his first term, Donald Trump put tariffs on Chinese goods, and China responded with its own. Since October 2022 Washington has limited sales of advanced computer chips to China. It says those chips can be used for military AI. Beijing calls the limits an attempt to hold back its growth. Trump returned to office in January 2025 and raised tariffs again. Xi Jinping has led China since 2012–13. His last state visit to Washington was in 2015.
The actors. - The United States wants trade terms that favour it and limits on China's access to technology. Its government faces midterm elections in November 2026. - China wants tariffs and technology limits lifted. It also defends governments that Washington opposes. It has long criticised the US embargo on Cuba, in place since the early 1960s. - Iran has been hostile to the United States since 1979. The reports we hold place a war in Iran on the leaders' agenda. They do not describe that war, and we do not add to it here.
What is at stake. A standing channel on AI would give the two governments a way to talk about a technology each sees as a military advantage. Without one, each side's chip and AI policy is set with no regular contact with the other.
Where it stands. The visit falls in the week of the UN General Assembly, where heads of state give speeches each September. One report says the leaders will meet again this year. We cannot confirm that from a second source.
The story so far

- Trump hails a 'truly great friendship', Warren says he 'loves dictators' — and one outlet reports a trade truce to January · 24 Sep 2026
- taz calls it “a mistake by an AI”; the Washington Examiner says it was the Pentagon’s “blind faith” in one · 20 Sep 2026
- An AI error 'almost started a war' with China, says The Independent; Frankfurter Allgemeine says it nearly led to action against one ship · 19 Sep 2026
Earlier stories The AI Times filed on this thread.
What is being argued about
- Whether the visit produced anything: only Libération reports an AI channel and a further meeting
- Whether the visit is about US–China relations or about American midterm politics
- China's opposition to the US on Iran and Cuba at the UN, on the same day as the ceremony
- Whose account is missing: no report quotes Xi, and we hold no Chinese outlet
