Obozrevatel's headline merges the two: Russia "struck the train in which Boris Johnson was".

Warsaw's answers did not match. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński confirmed the strike on X. Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, in Kyiv, wrote "Putin is escalating". Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said dozens of jet drones flew overnight, one landing a kilometre from the border, and that Polish airspace was not violated. Donald Tusk called a meeting for 17:00. Espreso TV, relaying RMF FM, is the only report we hold saying the defence ministry sent journalists to the foreign ministry — which after 11:00 said it had no information, and whose spokesman then stopped taking calls.

Not settled. How many people were on either train: no report we hold gives a number. Whether Poland's foreign ministry said what that one report says it said. The two-kilometre distance rests on Espreso TV alone. No report we hold quotes a passenger.

What this is about. A Russian drone hit a passenger train on Ukraine's western railway, two kilometres short of the border with Poland — a member of both NATO and the European Union — on the line that carries European politicians in and out of Kyiv.

How it got here. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014, and war followed in eastern Ukraine. On 24 February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion. Ukraine's airspace has been shut to civil aviation ever since, so everyone who goes to Kyiv — ministers, members of parliament, former leaders — travels by rail, usually overnight to or from Poland. That made the Ukrainian railway both the country's lifeline and a target: Russia has struck rail infrastructure throughout the war, and the strikes have reached the western border. Espreso TV notes that Russia attacked Volyn with drones on 12 September, hitting rail infrastructure in Lutsk — the day before the train at the border was hit.

Who is in it. Ukrzaliznytsia, the state railway, runs the Kyiv–Warsaw service and reschedules trains around each strike. Poland governs the territory a few kilometres away and scrambles aircraft when drones come west; its ministers of interior, foreign affairs and defence all answered on the day. The passengers on the chartered train were European: Boris Johnson, British prime minister from 2019 to 2022, and, Espreso TV reports, Günter Sautter, foreign and security policy adviser to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, returning from talks in Kyiv about possible negotiations with Russia.

What is at stake. NATO's founding treaty binds its members to treat an armed attack on one as an attack on all. So where a drone comes down — inside Ukraine, or inside Poland — decides whether an incident stays Ukraine's war or becomes the alliance's.

Where it stands. Nobody was hurt. Trains to Warsaw were running again within hours, and Polish airspace, the defence minister said, was not crossed.
