Público's 450 are drones at Moscow, Rzeczpospolita's 450 are cancelled flights
Nine reports on one night over the Russian capital, on the last day of Russia's parliamentary election. Three reach for the same figure and each counts something different. Two give a death toll of two, in two different places. One dates the attack to Saturday.
One figure, three meanings. Nine reports carry Sunday's Ukrainian drone attack on Moscow. Three of them reach for 450, and it counts something different each time.
| Report | Its words | What the 450 counts |
|---|---|---|
| Público | "mais de 1600 drones", 450 of them towards Moscow | drones |
| Rzeczpospolita | "ponad 450 lotów" cancelled | flights at Moscow's airports |
| Observador | "quase 450 voos" cancelled or delayed | flights across Russia |
Neither flight figure names a source.
The dead. Two reports give a toll, both of two people, in different places. Público states it flat: two died in the Russian capital, with no one named as killing them. Dagens Nyheter attributes the same toll to Russian authorities and puts the deaths in the region. Neither names either of the dead.
What it was for. Politico Europe quotes Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin: "This unprecedented attack was clearly planned with the aim of disrupting the elections." Mediapart carries the same purpose as a claim "denounced by the authorities". Magyar Nemzet's headline states it as fact. HotNews.ro quotes President Volodymyr Zelensky naming an oil installation and a logistics base as the targets, and thanking "our fighters for precision".
Not settled. Whether the attack was aimed at the vote: the claim comes from Russian officials, and no Ukrainian statement we hold makes it. Where the two people died. And the day — Dagens Nyheter dates the attack to Saturday, the other eight to Sunday. No report we hold names the refinery struck, sources the flight figure, or carries a death toll and a flight count together.
What this is about. Ukraine flew drones at Moscow overnight while Russians were voting in a parliamentary election, and the accounts of that night differ on almost every number.
How it got here. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and backed armed separatists in the east. In February 2022 it invaded the rest of the country. Mediapart dates Sunday's attack to more than four and a half years after that war began. Ukraine's army is the smaller one, and much of its fight is now conducted at a distance: long-range drones flown deep into Russia, aimed at the oil refineries and fuel depots that keep the Russian army moving and that pay for the war through exports. Russia's parliamentary election ran over several days and closed on Sunday.
Who is in it. Vladimir Putin has led Russia since 2000, as president or as prime minister; Mediapart writes that the election was expected to end in a win for his party. Volodymyr Zelensky has been Ukraine's president since 2019, and in these reports he is the voice claiming the damage. Sergei Sobyanin has been mayor of Moscow since 2010, and the city's own account of what lands on it comes from his office. European papers follow this closely because the European Union arms Ukraine and sanctions Russia, so what Moscow says happened to it is a European political fact as well as a Russian one.
What is at stake. Two readings of the same night are on offer. In the Russian one it is an attempt to spoil an election. In the Ukrainian one it is a strike on the fuel that moves an army, and the vote is incidental. Which reading sticks shapes how the result of that vote is read outside Russia.
Where it stands. Voting was still under way on Sunday. Moscow's airports had stopped, Dagens Nyheter reports that a building of a Moscow refinery was hit, and Ukraine's General Staff, according to HotNews.ro, confirmed strikes.
What is being argued about
- The 450: drones at Moscow, or flights cancelled
- Two dead — in the capital, or in the region
- Whether the attack was aimed at the election
- Saturday or Sunday
