Reuters calls it a “lightning offensive” that puts the US “in a new bind”; Al Jazeera asks “can they hold it?”
Six reports on one advance towards Bab al-Mandab. One names the island. Two carry Trump saying the Houthis telephoned him. None quotes anyone in Yemen.
The advance. Reuters, whose analysis Al-Monitor carries in full under a Washington dateline, calls it “a lightning offensive by the Iran-aligned Houthis” that has put “the militants in a position to control a crucial Middle East waterway”. Al Jazeera is the only report we hold that names the island — Mayun — and calls it a seizure, and it puts the doubt in the same headline: “Can they hold it?”
The strait. No report we hold says the Houthis control Bab al-Mandab. Reuters says they are in a position to. Al Jazeera says the takeover “solidifies the group's position” there. An-Nahar, writing about the port of Mokha, places the strait about 50 miles south of it.
The telephone call.
| Outlet | What it said | Hedged? |
|---|---|---|
| Welt | „Die Huthi haben uns angerufen, und sie wollen nicht gegen uns kämpfen“ | No — a quotation headline, no speaker named in it |
| Shargh | ادعای ترامپ — Trump's claim, and the group called انصارالله | Yes — marked a claim in the headline |
Not settled. Whether the island was taken, and whether it can be held: one report says so, and hedges itself. Whether the call happened: two reports carry it, both quoting the same speaker, and neither carries a Houthi answer or says the call could not be confirmed. Whether anyone was killed: no report we hold gives a figure or a name. And we hold only a headline from Reuters and one sentence from Welt, so for two of the six we know what was put at the top and not what followed.
What this is about: an armed group in Yemen, the Houthis, is advancing on one of the world's busiest sea lanes. The United States, already at war with Iran, has to decide how to respond.
How it got here
- 2014: The Houthis, a movement from Yemen's north that calls itself Ansar Allah, took the capital, Sanaa. The government they pushed out is the one most states still recognise. It now sits in Aden.
- March 2015: A Saudi-led coalition, including the United Arab Emirates, went to war against the Houthis. Iran backed the Houthis politically. How much Iran arms or directs them is disputed.
- April 2022: A UN-brokered truce mostly stopped the fighting between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. No peace deal followed.
- From November 2023: After the Gaza war began, the Houthis attacked ships in the Red Sea. They said they were acting for the Palestinians. The US and Britain struck Houthi targets from January 2024.
- 2026: Reuters says Washington's war with Iran is in its seventh month. Welt reports that Trump blames Iran for an attack on an oil pipeline in Saudi Arabia. Shargh reports Trump saying the Houthis asked the US to stay out of their conflict with Saudi Arabia.
The place. Bab al-Mandab is the narrow strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa. It joins the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, and ships heading to or from the Suez Canal pass through it. An-Nahar puts it about 50 miles south of the port of Mokha. Mayun is a small island inside the strait.
Who is involved, and why
| Actor | Why it is in this |
|---|---|
| The Houthis | They hold most of Yemen's north and are pushing south along the coast |
| Yemen's recognised government | It is losing coastal ground |
| Saudi Arabia | It led the war against the Houthis and borders them |
| Iran | It is aligned with the Houthis and at war with the US |
| United States | It is at war with Iran and has protected shipping here before |
What is at stake. If the Houthis hold the coast and the strait, they can threaten a main route between Asia and Europe. If they cannot, the advance may be reversed.
Where it stands. No report we hold says the Houthis control the strait. No report gives a death toll.

What is being argued about
- Whether the Houthis have taken Mayun Island — one report says so and hedges it in the same headline
- Whether control of Bab al-Mandab has changed hands, or only come within reach
- Whether the Houthis telephoned Washington asking it to stay out, as Trump says they did
- What the group is called: Houthis, Iran-aligned Houthis, the militants, or Ansarallah
