All three trace to the same regional operational headquarters, so this is one account told three ways. No independent account of the strike is in what we hold.

Interfax carries both outcomes. Its body says wounded. Above it sits a line pointing to a 16:41 update: a man died in a drone detonation in a Belgorod village. That line names no village, so we cannot say it is the Krutoy Log man.

Who acted changes by sentence. RIA Novosti and Life.ru name Ukraine's armed forces in their headlines. The Interfax body names them too. The Life.ru body and the Interfax update line do not: there a drone attacks, and a drone detonates, with no actor named.

Not settled. Whether the man died. Whether the death RIA Novosti reports is this man or another man elsewhere. Who he is — all three call him a civilian and stop. The same Interfax report counts five damaged cars.

This story is about a Ukrainian drone strike on a van inside Russia, near the Ukrainian border, and about how Russia's own reports of that strike disagree on whether the man in the van lived.

How it got here. - The war began in 2014. That year Russia annexed Crimea, and fighting broke out in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region between Ukraine's forces and Russian-backed armed groups. - In February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Moscow calls it a "special military operation". Kyiv and most Western governments call it a war of aggression. - Belgorod region is in Russia, directly across the border from Ukraine's Kharkiv region. Russian forces crossed from there in 2022. Since then the region has been a staging ground for Russia's forces and a target for Ukrainian drones and shelling. - In August 2024 Ukrainian troops crossed into Russia's neighbouring Kursk region. That brought ground fighting onto Russian soil for the first time in this war.

Who is in it. - Ukraine's armed forces, named in the Russian reports as the attacker. The reports carry no Ukrainian comment. - Belgorod's regional operational headquarters, the local authority that publishes daily lists of strikes and injuries. It is the only source all three reports cite. - Russian outlets, which carry those bulletins. Since 2022, Russian law has punished reporting that departs from official accounts of the war. Independent reporters rarely work near the border, so the regional authority's word is often the only account there is.

What is at stake. Civilians are being hurt on both sides of the border. Our report of 11 September covered a strike on Dnipro, in Ukraine. Each side cites its own civilian casualties as proof of the other's aggression. That makes the question of who counts a death, and when, more than a matter of record-keeping.

Where it stands. The Russian reports we hold say the man was wounded, or that he was killed. None of them names him. We hold no Ukrainian account of the strike and no independent one.
