Russia's defence ministry says Kyiv's North Bridge moves troops; Dagens Nyheter calls it the capital's main traffic route
Russia's defence ministry says it hit the North Bridge over the Dnipro in Kyiv and two cargo ships bound for Odesa on 4 October. Every report we hold on the ships rests on that one statement. None gives a casualty figure.
What happened. Russia's defence ministry said its forces hit the North Bridge over the Dnipro in Kyiv on 4 October, "today in the daytime", Interfax reports. The ministry said they also hit two dry-cargo ships in the north-western Black Sea on their way to Odesa. Dagens Nyheter separately reports a renewed Russian attack on the bridge.
One account, five reports. Interfax, Regnum and Life.ru all relay the same ministry statement. That is one source, not three. No report we hold quotes a Ukrainian official.

Military expert Johan Huovinen told Dagens Nyheter: "They want to disrupt people's movement patterns."
The ships. Interfax quotes the ministry: the ships were "delivering military property" to Odesa. Regnum's headline says they carried "cargo for the Ukrainian armed forces", with no attribution.
What is not settled. - Whether anyone was hurt on the bridge or the ships. No report gives a figure. - What the ships carried, who owns them, or what they are called. Only Russia's ministry describes them. - How badly the bridge is damaged. No report says.
What this is about. Russia says it struck a road bridge in Kyiv and two cargo ships heading for Ukraine's main port. It is the latest episode in a war now in its fifth year.
How it got here. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. The same year it backed an armed uprising in the eastern Donbas region. On 24 February 2022 it launched a full-scale invasion. Its forces reached the outskirts of Kyiv, then withdrew from the north that spring. Since then the fighting has run along a long front in the east and south. Both sides strike each other's infrastructure far behind it.
Why bridges. Kyiv sits on both banks of the Dnipro. A handful of bridges join the two halves of a city of millions. Dagens Nyheter reports that the southern bridge was hit by two drone attacks earlier this week, before Sunday's strike on the northern one.
Why Odesa. Odesa is Ukraine's largest seaport and the outlet for much of its grain. A deal brokered by the UN and Turkey let grain ships sail from July 2022. Russia left that deal in July 2023 and said ships bound for Ukrainian ports could be treated as carrying military cargo. Ukraine has since run shipping along its own corridor near its coast.
The actors. Russia's defence ministry announces its strikes in daily statements, and Russian outlets often relay them word for word. Ukraine's government and Kyiv's city authorities usually report damage and casualties from their side. We hold no Ukrainian account of this day.
What is at stake. If Kyiv's river crossings are cut, getting across the capital becomes harder for everyone in it. If shipping to Odesa is hit, Ukraine's exports are at risk, and so are the buyers who rely on them.
Where it stands. We hold Russia's statement and one Swedish report. None of our reports covers the damage, any casualties or the ships' cargo.
