Shargh: fighting in Hormuz 'every day and every night'. An-Nahar: Trump says a billion barrels escorted through
Two governments describe the same water on the same afternoon. Neither report we hold carries the other's account, and none gives a casualty figure for the Strait.
The claim. Shargh, a Tehran daily, quotes the Revolutionary Guard's deputy for inspection saying the war "continues", and that forces are fighting "every day and every night" in the Strait of Hormuz, the Sea of Oman and the Gulf, taking martyrs and inflicting losses on "the enemy". He gives no figure for either side.
The other account. An-Nahar, in Beirut, relays Trump at the UN General Assembly the same afternoon: the US Navy "recently" escorted more than a billion barrels of oil through the Strait. He does not say over what period, and does not mention fighting there.
| Outlet | The Strait is | Who is quoted | Adversary named | Figure given |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shargh (Tehran) | fought over day and night | the Guard's deputy for inspection | no — "the enemy" | none |
| An-Nahar (Beirut) | a route where tankers are escorted | Trump, at the General Assembly | yes — Iran, throughout | more than a billion barrels |
What is not settled. Whether there is fighting in the Strait at all. Three reports, no casualty figure for it from either side, and no report carrying both accounts. Two of the three are from Shargh, so the parliament speaker's defiance does not corroborate the Guard's claim. All three are one official relayed without a reply, and no voice from outside a government is quoted in any of them.
What this is about. Iran's armed forces and the United States are each describing the Strait of Hormuz, and they are not describing the same thing.
How it got here. The Strait is the narrow sea passage between Iran's southern coast and Oman, joining the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman; it is the only sea route out of the Gulf, and one of the busiest oil routes in the world. Iran and the United States have had no diplomatic relations since 1980. In 2015 Iran signed a deal with six powers limiting its nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief; the United States left that deal in 2018 and restored sanctions. Trump returned to office in January 2025. In his General Assembly speech, carried by An-Nahar, he says American forces erased Iranian nuclear sites in air strikes in 2025, that he offered Tehran economic co-operation in return for ending its nuclear programme and its support for terrorism, and that it refused — his account, from the podium, and the only one in the reports we hold.
Who is in it. The Revolutionary Guard is a branch of Iran's armed forces separate from the regular army, with its own naval force in the Gulf; the second Iranian report carries the speaker of Iran's parliament. On the other side, the US Navy keeps a permanent presence in the Gulf.
What is at stake. If the Strait is a war zone, the world's tankers are sailing through one. If it is escorted shipping, the pressure on Iran is economic rather than military. The same water cannot be both at once.
Where it stands. The 81st General Assembly opened in New York on Tuesday with 130 heads of state, heads of government and senior officials present, An-Nahar reports. Trump told it he will settle the Iran question one way or another, and called on every state to join the economic blockade. Tehran's answer, through its parliament speaker: no waiting, no surrender, and the country will not be shut down.

What is being argued about
- Whether fighting is under way in the Strait of Hormuz at all
- What each side measures: martyrs and casualties, or barrels escorted
- How the Iranian reports name the adversary — "the enemy", never a state
- That no report we hold gives a number for the Strait
