Telex: Budapest has 'cleared up misunderstandings' with Kyiv; Rzeczpospolita: Magyar wants to keep buying Russian gas and oil
On the same day, a Hungarian news site led with the foreign ministry mending ties with Ukraine, and a Polish paper led with Péter Magyar's government asking Washington for more time on Russian energy. Both outlets report the sanctions talks. They disagree on which part is the news. We hold no Ukrainian account and no account from the White House.
Two reports lead with Kyiv, one with Moscow. Both Telex reports lead with Hungary's foreign ministry. Its line is that misunderstandings with Ukraine "have been cleared up". Telex says Foreign Minister Anita Orbán met her Ukrainian counterpart several times during the UN high-level week in New York. Rzeczpospolita leads with Prime Minister Péter Magyar's government asking the White House to extend Hungary's exemption from sanctions on Russian oil and gas.
| Telex (Hungary) | Rzeczpospolita (Poland) | |
|---|---|---|
| Headline subject | Ties with Ukraine | Russian gas and oil |
| Sanctions exemption | One sentence: talks "with the Americans" | The lede |
| Says it covers Russian energy | No | Yes |
| Expiry date | Not given | November |
| MOL | Not mentioned | "Konflikt z MOL" in the headline |
| Ukraine quoted | No | No |
Attribution differs too. Telex attributes the diplomatic claim to the ministry. Rzeczpospolita states as fact that "Hungary needs more time" to break its dependence on Russian raw materials. It does not say whose view that is.
Both confirm the exemption talks. Telex says Hungary "is also negotiating with the Americans on the sanctions exemption". Rzeczpospolita says the exemption lasts a year.
What is not settled: - whether Kyiv agrees anything was cleared up. No Ukrainian voice appears in any report we hold; - what the conflict with MOL is. Rzeczpospolita's headline names it, and the text we hold does not explain it; - whether Washington will grant the extension. We hold no US account.
What this is about. Hungary's new government wants to keep importing Russian oil and gas under a US sanctions waiver. It is also trying to repair relations with Ukraine.
How it got here. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then the European Union has cut most of its imports of Russian energy and adopted rolling packages of sanctions. Hungary is landlocked and still depends heavily on Russian crude, which arrives through the Druzhba pipeline, and on Russian gas. Under Viktor Orbán, prime minister from 2010, Budapest resisted many EU sanctions steps and slowed Ukraine's path to membership. Relations with Kyiv were also strained over the rights of the Hungarian minority in western Ukraine. In 2025 the United States put sanctions on Russia's largest oil companies. Hungary then won a US exemption. Rzeczpospolita says it lasts one year and runs out in November. This year Péter Magyar, who leads the opposition Tisza party, replaced Orbán as prime minister.
The actors. - The Magyar government has to decide how quickly to wean Hungary off Russian energy. - Anita Orbán, the foreign minister, handles the relationship with Kyiv. - Ukraine is at war with Russia. Hungary's vote in the Council of the EU counts on sanctions and on Ukraine's accession talks. - The White House controls the US exemption. - MOL, Hungary's largest oil company, refines Russian crude.
What is at stake. If the exemption lapses, Hungary's supply of Russian energy is put in doubt. If it is extended, Budapest keeps buying from Moscow while the rest of the Union cuts back. Better relations with Kyiv could change how Hungary votes in Brussels on Ukraine.
Where it stands. The exemption talks with Washington are under way and no outcome has been reported. The account of better ties with Ukraine comes only from Hungary's foreign ministry.
What is being argued about
- Hungary asking Washington to extend its one-year exemption from sanctions on Russian oil and gas
- Hungary's foreign ministry saying misunderstandings with Ukraine have been cleared up
- Anita Orbán's meetings with her Ukrainian counterpart at the UN in New York
- A conflict with the oil company MOL, which Rzeczpospolita names but does not explain in the text we hold
