The Jerusalem Post says the Houthis took the port of Mocha; El Mundo says they took an island
Five reports carry the same Red Sea advance. Two name Mocha, one names the islet Zuqar, one says only "a strategic city", one says only the coast. None counts anyone hurt.
What was taken. Five reports carry a Houthi advance on Yemen's Red Sea coast, and they do not name the same ground.
| Outlet | Where it says the Houthis now are |
|---|---|
| The Jerusalem Post | "the port city of Mocha" |
| Al-Modon | "المخا" — Mocha |
| Reuters | "a strategic city on the Red Sea", unnamed |
| El Mundo | "el islote Zuqar", in the Hanish archipelago |
| The Guardian | "along the Red Sea coast", linking to its own report of the port |
How the Iran claim is carried. Three of the five name Iranian arms and advice as helping. Reuters puts "sources say" in the headline; Al-Modon itemises them — Reuters, citing Yemeni government, Iranian and regional sources. The Jerusalem Post credits a report in its headline, then states flat, with no source, that the Houthis "have strengthened their chokehold on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait".
Whose stake is named. The Guardian reaches the advance through bond markets: oil up 6% to above $107 a barrel on Thursday, on fears it "could choke off Saudi crude exports".
Not settled. Whether the island landing El Mundo describes — missiles from the mainland, fighters put ashore by boat — happened at all. It names no source, and no other report we hold carries it or denies it. Nor whether anyone was killed or hurt: no report we hold gives a figure, and none says there was none. No report quotes anyone living in the city or on the island.
What this is about. Yemen's Houthi movement has pushed south along the country's Red Sea coast, towards the narrow strait that ships must pass between Europe and Asia.
How it got here. - 2014–15. The Houthis, an armed movement from Yemen's north that calls itself Ansar Allah, took the capital, Sanaa, in September 2014. In March 2015 a Saudi-led coalition went to war to restore the internationally recognised government. The war split the country. The Houthis hold Sanaa and most of the populous north-west. The government works from Aden, in the south. - 2017. Coalition-backed forces took Mocha, an old port on the coast north of the strait, from the Houthis. It has marked the southern end of the Red Sea front since. - 2022. A UN-brokered truce in April largely stopped the Saudi–Houthi fighting. - Late 2023 onwards. After the Gaza war began, the Houthis attacked shipping in the Red Sea and said they were acting for Palestinians. The United States and Britain began striking Houthi targets in January 2024. - This month. Our earlier coverage carried Houthi strikes on Saudi oil facilities on 8 and 9 September, and clashes with Saudi Arabia. Earlier this year the United States and Iran were at war; the Jerusalem Post describes a ceasefire in April.
Who is involved, and why. - The Houthis want to take the rest of Yemen. They also use the sea lanes as leverage. - The Yemeni government and Saudi Arabia want to stop them. Saudi Arabia has fought the Houthis since 2015, and its oil sites have been targets. - Iran is the Houthis' main foreign backer. The United States and UN experts have said Iran arms them. Iran has long denied it. - The Hanish islands, where El Mundo places the landing, lie in the strait's approaches. Yemen and Eritrea fought over them in 1995. An arbitration ruling in 1998 gave most of them, including Zuqar, to Yemen.
What is at stake. The Bab el-Mandeb joins the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, and it is the route to the Suez Canal. Whoever holds the coast beside it can threaten the ships. The Guardian ties Thursday's 6% jump in oil, to above $107 a barrel, to fears that the advance could cut off Saudi crude exports. Dearer oil feeds inflation and raises borrowing costs.
Where it stands. The reports agree that the Houthis have advanced. They do not agree on where, and none gives a count of the dead or wounded.

What is being argued about
- Which place the Houthis actually took — a mainland port or an island
- Whether Iranian weapons and advice helped, and on whose word
- What the advance threatens: the strait, or Saudi crude sailings
- Who is absent: nobody in Yemen is quoted, nobody is counted
