The Washington Post calls Kremlev a boxing chief who does state business, The Hill an oligarch, MSNBC a close Putin ally
Four reports say Umar Kremlev paid for parties at Donald Trump Jr.'s May wedding. Only one says where that comes from: the bride.
What is reported. On 14 September The Washington Post reported that Umar Kremlev hosted two nights of parties for Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding. It says this comes from the bride. The Hill and MSNBC followed the next day.
Four reports, three words for one man.
| Report | What Kremlev is | What he paid for | Source named |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Washington Post | "powerful Russian businessman" who "heads the International Boxing Association" | "two nights of parties" | the bride |
| The Hill, explainer | "Russian oligarch" | "after-party events" | none in the text we hold |
| The Hill, Ocasio-Cortez | oligarch "linked to" Putin | wedding "partially funded" | none in the text we hold |
| MSNBC | "a close ally" of Putin | "bankrolled" the celebration | "new reporting", not named |
The reports don't agree on the bride's name. The Washington Post calls her Bettina Trump. The Hill calls her Bettina Anderson.
The politics. The Hill reports that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) says the administration is "selling out" every American. The Hill's explainer says the reports "sparked concerns" but does not say who holds them.
What is not settled. - How much. None of the reports we hold gives a sum. - The Putin tie. Two reports say he is tied to Putin. Neither gives evidence in the text we hold. - A reply. None of the text we hold quotes Kremlev, Trump Jr. or the White House. - The full articles. For three of the four reports we hold only the opening lines.
What this is about. Whether money from a Russian businessman paid for the wedding celebrations of the American president's eldest son — and what that would mean.
How it got here. Donald Trump Jr. is the eldest son of Donald Trump, who returned to the White House in January 2025 for a second term as president. Trump Jr. holds no government post; he runs the family's private business and campaigns for his father. He married in May 2026. The reports we hold name the bride as Bettina but differ on her surname.
Russia has been a live subject in Trump family politics since 2016, when Trump Jr. met a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower after being offered damaging material on Hillary Clinton — a meeting later examined by Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in that election. After Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the United States and its allies sanctioned Russian businessmen and firms, and Russian money reaching American political figures became a legal question as well as a political one.
Who Kremlev is. Umar Kremlev has led the International Boxing Association since 2020. It is boxing's long-standing world governing body; its main sponsor has been the Russian state energy company Gazprom, and the International Olympic Committee withdrew recognition of it in June 2023. The Washington Post says Kremlev "does business with the state".
What is at stake. Gift and foreign-money rules bind serving officials. The president's adult son is not one, and none of the reports we hold names a law broken. So the argument is about influence and access, not a charge — and it lands as the parties head toward midterm elections in November. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) has taken it up.
Where it stands. The Washington Post published on 14 September; two more reports followed on 15 September. No sum is given, no evidence is set out for the Putin tie, and nobody named has answered.
