Trump 'rejected' Iran's Hormuz offer, say Al Jazeera and Asharq Al-Awsat; Iran is 'still waiting' for a US answer, Araghchi tells The Jerusalem Post
Iran offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to end a six-month war. Trump says he turned it down. Iran's foreign minister calls that an initial reaction and says the formal US reply has not come. The reports do not agree on what was offered, either.
What is agreed. Every report that mentions the plan says Trump said he rejected it. Asharq Al-Awsat and North Press attribute that to Trump's own words. Al Jazeera English states the rejection in its own headline.
Where the accounts split. Is the offer dead, or waiting on a formal reply?
| Report | Status of the offer | Words used |
|---|---|---|
| Al Jazeera English | Rejected | "Trump's rejection of Iran's truce offer" |
| Asharq Al-Awsat | Rejected, per Trump | "Trump said he rejected" |
| North Press | Rejected, per Trump | "Trump said he had rejected" |
| The Jerusalem Post | Pending | "still waiting for official US response" |
| The Jerusalem Post, analysis | Stalling | "appears to be stalling" |
What was offered. The Jerusalem Post's analysis says Iran offered to reopen Hormuz "for a seven-day ceasefire". Shargh quotes Araghchi saying Iran "will not retreat from its seven conditions" for reopening the strait. Asharq Al-Awsat quotes him: any reopening "is contingent on these conditions being met". No report lists the conditions.
The army's warning. Four reports carry the army spokesperson, Mohammad Akraminia, saying Iran is ready for a new US attack. IRNA and North Press write that he "emphasized" or "said" it. The Jerusalem Post headline says he "claims" it.
What is not settled. - Whether Washington has sent a formal reply through the mediators. No report quotes a US official other than Trump. - What the seven conditions are, and whether a seven-day ceasefire is one of them. - Who the mediators are. No report names them.
What this is about. Whether the one proposal on the table to end the war between Iran and the United States is still alive.
How it got here. Iran and Israel fought a shadow war for decades, through proxies, assassinations and sabotage of Iran's nuclear programme. After Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023 and Israel went to war in Gaza, it became open fire between Israel and Iran, and between Israel and the groups Iran backs in Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq. In June 2025 Israel struck Iran directly and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. The Jerusalem Post says the fighting now under way has run "six months". Asharq Al-Awsat calls it Iran's conflict "with the United States and Israel".
The strait. The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow sea passage between Iran and Oman. It is the Gulf's only outlet to the open sea, used by oil and gas tankers from Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iran. A closure is felt in energy prices worldwide. The reports describe Iran's offer as a plan to "reopen" it, so shipping through it is now blocked.
The actors. Donald Trump is the US president. Abbas Araghchi is Iran's foreign minister and leads its diplomacy. Mohammad Akraminia speaks for Iran's regular army. Israel is a party to the war but does not appear in these reports on the offer. The mediators carrying messages between Tehran and Washington are not named.
What is at stake. If the offer is dead, the strait stays shut, and both sides say they are ready for more fighting. If it has only stalled, a formal US reply could still open talks.
Where it stands. Asharq Al-Awsat reports that Iran announced the plan at the UN General Assembly last week. Trump says he rejected it. Iran says it will decide once the mediators deliver Washington's definitive position.
