Trump rejects Iran's Hormuz plan: The Hill calls it a ceasefire offer, Haaretz a plan to open the waterway, and one Lebanese paper lists the $12bn price
Donald Trump said on Saturday he was rejecting Iran's seven-day proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The reports we hold agree that he rejected it. They do not agree on what Iran offered, or on how long the deal would take.
What happened. The Hill reports that Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Saturday he was rejecting Iran's proposal. It quotes him: "I'm rejecting their deal." An-Nahar and LBCI carry his words that the proposal is "unacceptable". No report we hold disputes the rejection.
What was rejected depends on the report.
| Outlet | What it calls the plan | How long | Terms given |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Hill | reopen the strait "and enter a ceasefire" | 7 days | none |
| Haaretz | a "concrete" plan to open the waterway, in Abbas Araqchi's word | 7 days | none |
| An-Nahar | a proposal to stop hostilities and reopen the strait | strait reopens on day 7 | $12bn in frozen assets, oil sanctions lifted, US naval blockade ended |
| Shargh | a US offer for a "3-day" deal, amended to add Iran's conditions | 3 days | not in the text we hold |
What comes next. The Hill says Trump is considering renewed strikes after November's midterms. Its text names no source. An-Nahar says unnamed US officials told the Wall Street Journal the same thing. That is one account, not two.
Trump's claim of control. Trump says the US has complete control of the strait and that 29 ships crossed overnight. Shargh writes that he "claimed" it. An-Nahar adds "in his words". Neither gives a ship count from anyone else.
Not settled. - Whether Shargh's 3-day US offer and Iran's 7-day plan are one negotiation or two. - Whether technical talks took place. Shargh carries Tasnim denying any. - Iran's terms rest on a single report, An-Nahar's.
This story is about a waterway on Iran's coast, and whether the United States will accept Iran's terms for letting ships through it again.
How it got here. The Strait of Hormuz is the narrow sea passage between Iran and Oman. It links the Gulf to the open ocean. Tankers carrying oil and gas from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and Iran pass through it, so what happens there moves energy prices worldwide.
The United States and Iran have been adversaries since the 1979 revolution. Washington has kept sanctions on Iran for decades, including on its oil. A 2015 nuclear deal eased some of them. Trump took the US out of it in 2018 and put them back. After the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023 and the war in Gaza that followed, Israel and Iran moved from fighting through allies to striking each other directly in 2024. In June 2025 the US joined Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
The reports we hold describe the situation now: fighting under way, a US naval blockade of Iranian ports, Iranian assets frozen abroad, and fighting that reaches Lebanon.
The actors. - Iran, represented by Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, wants sanctions and the blockade lifted before a final deal. - The United States, under Trump, wants free passage through the strait and guarantees on Iran's nuclear programme, An-Nahar reports. - Qatar has carried messages between the two during the UN General Assembly in New York, An-Nahar reports. - Russia: Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the General Assembly that Moscow is ready to help stabilise the strait.
What is at stake. A deal could reopen normal shipping and pause the fighting. Without one, the blockade could go on. If one unnamed-source account is right, US strikes could also resume after November.
Where it stands. An-Nahar reports that Trump has rejected the plan but has not announced an end to contacts. Shargh reports that Araqchi's delegation returns to Tehran on Tuesday.

What is being argued about
- Whether Iran's plan was a ceasefire or only a plan to reopen the strait
- Iran's terms: $12bn in frozen assets, oil sanctions and the US naval blockade
- Seven days or three: two timelines for two different offers
- Renewed US strikes after the midterms, on one unnamed-source account
