Trump says 30 ships a night through Hormuz; Iran's Rezaei says five or six, and struck
One of the five reports we hold names who restricted the strait. Three measure it as an oil price. None quotes anyone in Oman, whose route Tehran is refusing.
The argument is the route. An-Nahar, the only report we hold that goes near the water, says Iran insists ships take a northern lane it drew along its own coast, "refusing at the same time a southern route set by Muscat". Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araghchi told his Japanese counterpart there had been "major progress" in the talks with Oman. Muscat's route reaches us only through Tehran's rejection of it.
The counts do not meet.
| Who | Ships a night through Hormuz | Said of the same nights |
|---|---|---|
| Donald Trump | 30, with US forces helping them across | An-Nahar, reporting the US president |
| Mohsen Rezaei, Iran's security council secretary | five or six, and "usually struck" | An-Nahar, same report, dated Sunday |
Three reports price it instead. Reuters says Gulf tensions sent oil to a more than six-week high; its English and Portuguese lines are one account, not two. De Telegraaf has the price creeping towards $100 a barrel and does not mention the strait. Anadolu's headline gives China's position — dialogue, not military pressure — but the text we hold is a caption of Wang Yi hosting Qatar's prime minister.
Not settled. Whether Iran and Oman have agreed anything: only Iran's ministry says so, and we hold no Omani account. We could not reach Omani outlets this week, which is not the same as their staying silent. Neither ship count has a third source. Nobody counts a crew.
What this is about: who controls shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow sea lane between Iran and Oman, in a war between Iran and the United States and Israel.
How it got here
- Iran's nuclear programme has divided Tehran and Washington for two decades. A 2015 deal limited the programme in exchange for sanctions relief. In 2018, during Donald Trump's first term, the US left the deal and brought back sanctions on Iran's oil sales.
- The war in Gaza that followed the attacks of 7 October 2023 turned a long shadow conflict between Iran and Israel into open strikes, first in 2024 and again in June 2025, when the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites.
- On 28 February 2026, the US and Israel launched a war against Iran, Anadolu reports. Tehran says more than 3,000 people have been killed; that is Iran's count, and we hold no other. Iran answered with attacks on US assets across the region.
- Iranian forces have restricted shipping through the strait since the war began, An-Nahar reports. The US answered with a naval blockade of Iran's ports.
- In June, Pakistan and Qatar brokered a memorandum between Washington and Tehran to halt the fighting and reopen the strait. It stalled over who owed what and over navigation. Fighting resumed in July, Anadolu reports.
Who is involved, and why
- Iran and Oman are the only two countries on the strait's shores. The shipping lanes pass through their waters.
- Oman has long mediated between Washington and Tehran.
- The United States is at war with Iran and says it is escorting ships through.
- Qatar and Pakistan brokered the June memorandum.
- China and Japan buy Gulf energy and need the lane open.
What is at stake
Much of the Gulf's oil and gas exports leave through Hormuz, so any closure shows up in fuel prices around the world. Iran says shipping will not return to how it was before the war. Iran and Oman have floated charging ships a fee for passage, which the US and other Gulf states reject, An-Nahar reports.
Where it stands
Iran and Oman are negotiating a temporary shipping route. Iranian officials say the strait stays shut until Washington lifts oil sanctions, releases frozen Iranian assets and ends its blockade of Iran's ports.

What is being argued about
- Which lane through the Strait of Hormuz ships must use — the northern one Tehran drew along its coast, or the southern one Oman set
- How many ships cross each night, and whether they are being struck
- What Iran demands before the strait reopens: oil sanctions lifted, frozen assets released, the naval blockade of its ports ended
- Whether the week's oil move gets an actor attached to it, or is left as "Gulf tensions"
