Ukrainska Pravda says Ukraine lost a MiG-29 and its pilot; Suspilne and Censor.NET report only the pilot's death, by name
Three Ukrainian outlets reported on 1 October that a MiG-29 pilot of the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade had been killed on a combat mission. Only one says the aircraft was lost too. None of the three says where it happened, how, or who brought the jet down.
What all three agree on. A Ukrainian MiG-29 pilot from the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade, known as "Ghost of Kyiv", died on a combat mission. Suspilne attributes the news to Ukraine's Air Force. The three reports went out within ten minutes of each other on 1 October.
Where they differ. Ukrainska Pravda leads with the loss: "Ukraine lost a pilot and a MiG-29 fighter in combat." It does not name the pilot. Suspilne and Censor.NET lead with the man: Captain Marat Mambetov, a flight commander. Only Censor.NET gives his patronymic and dates his death.

What is NOT settled. - Whether the jet was lost. Only Ukrainska Pravda says it was. The other two say only that he died flying one. - How. No report says whether the jet was shot down, crashed or was hit on the ground, or who was responsible. - Where. No report names a place. - The other side. We found no Russian report on this loss. All three reports we hold are Ukrainian and written in Ukrainian.
What this is about: a Ukrainian fighter pilot was killed on a combat mission, and one Ukrainian outlet says his jet was lost too, in the war Russia is fighting against Ukraine.
How it got here. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. The same year it backed armed separatists in eastern Ukraine. On 24 February 2022 it launched a full-scale invasion. Ukraine has fought it since, with weapons, money and training from the United States and European governments. The war is fought on land, at sea and in the air. Both sides have used aircraft, missiles, drones and air defences against each other.
The aircraft. The MiG-29 is a Soviet-designed fighter. Ukraine inherited its fleet when the Soviet Union broke up in 1991. After the invasion, allies including Poland and Slovakia sent Ukraine more of the same type, because its pilots were already trained to fly it. Western-built F-16s began to arrive in 2024. The MiG-29 still flies Ukrainian combat missions.
The unit. The 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade flies MiG-29s. Its nickname, "Ghost of Kyiv", comes from a legend that spread in the first days of the invasion about a pilot defending the capital.
The actors. Ukraine's Air Force announces its own losses, and it is the only source any of the three reports names. Russia's armed forces are the opposing side. None of the reports says whether Russian forces had any part in this loss.
What is at stake. Ukraine has few fighter aircraft and few trained pilots. Each one lost is hard to replace. Whether this jet was shot down, crashed or was lost in some other way matters for what it says about the air war. The reports do not settle it.
Where it stands. The Air Force has announced the pilot's death. As of 1 October we hold no report giving a place, a cause or an official word on the aircraft.

What is being argued about
- Whether Ukraine lost the MiG-29 itself or only its pilot
- Captain Marat Mambetov, flight commander in the 40th 'Ghost of Kyiv' brigade
- The absence of any cause, place or opposing force in the reports
- Ukraine's Air Force as the single named source
