Von der Leyen calls Russia "irresponsible and dangerous" over flares at Danish helicopter; Moscow's envoy blames Danish communications
Two of four reports say Russia fired flares towards a Danish military helicopter over the Baltic. Brussels blames Moscow. Russia's ambassador in Copenhagen blames Denmark. None of the four quotes Denmark.
What happened. A Russian frigate fired flares towards a Danish military helicopter over the Baltic, Ukrainska Pravda reports. The Independent's headline says "Russia shoots flares". Life.ru calls it an incident "between" a Russian warship and a Danish helicopter, with no one named as firing.
Brussels blames Moscow. Ursula von der Leyen wrote on X that Europe "once again" faced Russia's "irresponsible and dangerous" behaviour, Le Figaro reports. Ukrainska Pravda quotes her: "these are not isolated cases".
Moscow blames Copenhagen. Ambassador Vladimir Barbin says the incident shows communication problems "specifically on the Danish side", Life.ru reports, citing RIA Novosti.
Four reports, four framings.
| Outlet | Who fired | Whose words lead | The drone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ukrainska Pravda | A Russian frigate | Von der Leyen | Downed over Lithuania, "of unidentified type" |
| Le Figaro | Not said in what we hold | Von der Leyen | Mentioned, no place given |
| The Independent | Russia | No one quoted | Not mentioned |
| Life.ru | No one named | Ambassador Barbin | Not mentioned |
What is not settled.
- Denmark's account. None of the four reports quotes the Danish government or armed forces.
- Whose drone. No report says where the drone came from.
- A first for NATO? Only Ukrainska Pravda says NATO jets had never before shot down a drone over Lithuania.
- When and where. No report we hold gives a time or a position for the helicopter. We hold only the opening lines of three reports and the headline of The Independent's.
What this is about. A Russian warship and a Danish military helicopter came close enough over the Baltic Sea for flares to be fired, and Brussels and Moscow disagree about whose fault that was.
How it got here. Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022, and the war has stayed inside Ukraine ever since. The pressure has not. The Baltic Sea is now ringed almost entirely by NATO members: Finland joined the alliance in April 2023 and Sweden in March 2024, leaving Russia with the coast at St Petersburg and the exclave of Kaliningrad, wedged between Poland and Lithuania. Warships and military aircraft from both sides use the same narrow sea, and NATO air forces patrol the airspace above it. Over the past weeks that has produced a run of encounters near alliance territory — including, Ukrainska Pravda reports, NATO fighters shooting down a drone over Lithuania. This desk reported on 14 September that NATO's secretary general and Germany's defence minister described a sabotage attack on European rail in visibly different terms, one calling it a sign of weakness, the other a deliberate step up.
Who is in it. Denmark is a founding member of NATO and an EU state; its armed forces fly over the Baltic. Russia keeps its Baltic Fleet there. The European Commission is the EU's executive and Ursula von der Leyen has led it since 2019; she speaks for the bloc, not for Denmark's government. Ambassadors — such as Russia's in Copenhagen — are the channel through which two governments argue in public.
What is at stake. Flares are signal rockets, not ammunition. But every such encounter is read as a test of where the line is: whether NATO treats it as routine friction or as something requiring a response, and whether a war confined to Ukraine begins to touch alliance members directly.
Where it stands. As of 15 September, two capitals blame each other, and no account from Denmark itself appears in the reports we hold.
