Zelensky offers Miami; Lavrov answers "let him come" — to Moscow
Nine reports on one exchange, all filed inside 77 minutes. Ukrainska Pravda carries Lavrov calling the Moscow invitation "a huge gesture of goodwill"; Life.ru renders the same reply as "Let him come". Four reports call Zelensky president, three call him the head of the Kyiv regime, and none we hold has Moscow accepting Miami.
The offer. Efimerida ton Syntakton carries the words: asked by Deutsche Welle whether he would meet Putin at the December G20 in Miami if both were invited, Zelensky answered "Yes, of course." It is the only report we hold that quotes him, and the only one that names who put the question. Welt and Digi24 carry the same offer — but all three trace back to that one interview. One account, not three.
The answer. Six reports are built on Lavrov's reply, given at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, according to Regnum. They carry it differently.
| Outlet | Lavrov's reply, as carried |
|---|---|
| Ukrainska Pravda | Moscow invitation is "a huge gesture of goodwill"; open to talks, but the war will not stop |
| Life.ru | "Let him come" — to Moscow |
| Life.ru, Regnum | Zelensky travels a lot; Russia's leadership has business at home |
| Interfax, Vedomosti | Open to talks with Kyiv, with no pause in the "special operation" |
| Welt | Asks whether the G-20 becomes a peace summit |
Not settled. Whether Putin goes to Miami at all — Efimerida ton Syntakton says he has not decided. Whether an invitation to Moscow was sent: Ukrainska Pravda reports it as sent, and no other report we hold says so. And whether anything was agreed. Kyiv named a venue, Moscow named a different one, and no report we hold has either side accepting the other's.
What this is about: whether the leaders of Ukraine and Russia will meet face to face, and where. Each side has named a place the other has not accepted.
How it got here. - 2014: Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine. Fighting then began in the eastern Donbas region between Ukraine's forces and armed groups backed by Moscow. - 24 February 2022: Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Moscow calls it a "special military operation". Ukraine and most Western governments call it a war of aggression. - Spring 2022: Talks between the two sides, held partly in Istanbul, collapsed. - Autumn 2022: Russia declared four more Ukrainian regions annexed. Zelensky then signed a decree ruling out talks with Putin. Lavrov points to that decree now. - 2025: Delegations met again in Istanbul. The US president, Donald Trump, pressed both sides for a deal.
Zelensky and Putin last met in Paris in December 2019, before the full-scale invasion.
The actors. - Volodymyr Zelensky, president of Ukraine since 2019. Russian state outlets call his government "the Kyiv regime". - Vladimir Putin, president of Russia. - Sergei Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister since 2004, who answered for Moscow. - The G20, a forum of the largest economies. The United States holds its chair this year and hosts the summit in Miami on 14–15 December, Vedomosti reports. That puts Trump in the role of host.
What is at stake. The venue carries a message. A meeting in a third country treats the two leaders as equals. Ukrainska Pravda says Kyiv has long proposed neutral ground, and that Moscow has offered only Moscow. A meeting would be the first between the two men in almost seven years. Russia says it would keep fighting while any talks went on.
Where it stands. We know of no meeting that has been agreed. Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov says a trip to the G20 has not been discussed, Ukrainska Pravda reports. On 9 September Ukrinform reported that Ukraine's allies expect the war to last into 2027.

What is being argued about
- Where a Putin–Zelensky meeting would happen — Miami or Moscow
- Whether the fighting pauses while talks are held
- What each outlet calls Ukraine's president, and what each calls the war
- How much of this rests on one interview and one reply
