The Insider says a locomotive, the Jerusalem Post says a truck, Ziarul de Gardă says a filling station
Six reports on one morning of Russian drones two kilometres from Poland. Four different objects are named as hit, and one headline puts Boris Johnson on the train that was struck — its own text does not.
The object. Six reports, one morning — 13 September, on the Kyiv–Warsaw line in Volyn. They do not name the same target.
| Outlet | What it names as struck |
|---|---|
| The Insider | the locomotive of the Kyiv–Warsaw passenger train, about 2 km from the Polish border |
| taz | "a Russian drone hits a passenger train" near the Polish border |
| Ziarul de Gardă | a filling station near the Iahodyn–Dorohusk crossing — and, in the Polish minister's words, a passenger train |
| The Jerusalem Post | "Russia hits truck near Polish border" |
Who was aboard. Censor.NET's headline puts Boris Johnson, an adviser to Chancellor Friedrich Merz, diplomats and EU security advisers in "the train Russia attacked". Its own text says only "one of the trains". The Insider, citing Der Spiegel, and Ukrainska Pravda put them on a separately chartered train, evacuated because a different train was hit.
Nobody hurt. The Insider and taz agree: no injuries. Only The Insider says why — Ukrzaliznytsia's monitoring group warned the crew, and the Financial Times reports passengers were taken off and the locomotive uncoupled before the strike. Neither gives a passenger count.
Not settled. Whether the locomotive, the truck and the filling station were one impact told three ways or three separate strikes. No report we hold answers that. None names a crew member or anyone at the filling station. Five of six name Russia as firing; Ukrainska Pravda's sentence names no actor.
What this is about: Russian drones struck close to Ukraine's border with Poland, on the railway that foreign officials use to reach Kyiv. That railway runs right beside a NATO country.
How it got here. - 2014: Russia annexed Crimea. Fighting began in Ukraine's east between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed forces. - 24 February 2022: Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine closed its airspace to civilian flights. Since then, most foreign leaders and diplomats have reached Kyiv by train, usually through Poland. The Kyiv–Warsaw line is one of the main routes. - Since 2022: Russia has struck Ukraine's railways and energy sites far from the front. Ukraine has struck Russian refineries. We reported on one of those strikes, at Ryazan, on 10 September. - September 2025: Poland shot down Russian drones inside its own airspace and asked for consultations under NATO's Article 4.
Who is involved, and why. - Russia launched the drones. Five of the six reports we hold say so. - Ukraine runs the railway through its state company, Ukrzaliznytsia. Volyn, where the strike happened, is the region that borders Poland. Yahodyn–Dorohusk is one of the crossings between the two countries. - Poland is a NATO member. Under NATO's Article 5, an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all. Poland is also the main land route for aid and visitors going into Ukraine. - European officials were on a train on the same line. They included Boris Johnson, the UK prime minister from 2019 to 2022, and an adviser to Friedrich Merz, Germany's chancellor since May 2025. Their presence is why the strike got attention outside the region.
What is at stake. If a strike lands on the Polish side, or hits a train carrying foreign officials, NATO members would have to decide how to respond. A war between Russia and Ukraine could become a direct confrontation with the alliance. A lesser risk is that the line becomes too dangerous to use, which would close off the easiest way into Ukraine.
Where it stands. The reports we hold say nobody was hurt. They do not agree on what was hit. Peace talks are stalled. On 12 September we reported that Ukraine's president offered Miami as a venue and Russia's foreign minister answered that he should come to Moscow.

What is being argued about
- What a Russian drone hit on the Kyiv–Warsaw line on 13 September
- Whether Boris Johnson was on the train that was struck or on a second train evacuated
- Why nobody was injured, and who says so
- How the strike is located — two kilometres from Poland, or near NATO
