Welt: "classified as confirmed far-right". The agency copy taz runs: "far-right in parts"
The AfD took 43.8% and 39 of 83 seats in Saxony-Anhalt, three short of a majority. The reports we hold use four different words for the party, and give two opposite accounts of what the five-seat BSW will do next.
The result. The AfD took 43.8% and 39 of the 83 seats in Magdeburg, three short of a majority, on a turnout of 77.8% against 60.3% in 2021. The CDU fell from 37.1% to 17.2% — its worst in the state, below the 22.0% Welt gives as the previous low, in 1998. Friedrich Merz called it his party's "heaviest defeat in decades".
Four words for one party. Every report describes the same state finding. None writes it the same way.
| Outlet | What it calls the AfD | Who applied the label |
|---|---|---|
| Welt | "classified as confirmed far-right" | the state intelligence service, named in the sentence |
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | "classified as confirmed far-right" | no body named |
| taz, in agency copy | "far-right in parts" | no source given |
| NOS | "radical-right" | the outlet's own voice |
| Le Monde | "far right" | in the headline, flat |
The kingmaker. The BSW crossed the threshold with 5.3% and five seats. Its lead candidate told the Frankfurter Allgemeine "the firewall does not interest us", and told a radio interviewer the same day that his group would abstain in a third ballot. The party's federal co-leader said it would vote for neither the AfD's Ulrich Siegmund nor the CDU's Sven Schulze.
Not settled. No deadline exists for electing a premier; the new parliament must sit by 6 October. Siegmund says he will stand "if it becomes clear that I can put together a stable majority". Euractiv writes that three CDU members crossing the line would be enough; the Frankfurter Allgemeine reports every other party ruled out a coalition before the vote. We hold no report that names one who would cross.
What this is about. A far-right-classified party won a German state election on 6 September and is three seats short of governing that state alone. Whether it can find those three seats is now the open question.
How it got here. - Germany is a federation of 16 states, the Länder. Each has its own parliament and premier, and runs its own schools, police and state intelligence office. Saxony-Anhalt, population 2.1 million, was part of communist East Germany until reunification in 1990. - The Alternative for Germany (AfD) was founded in 2013 during the euro crisis. Its main issue later became migration. It has been strongest in the former East. Its previous best state result was 32.8% in Thuringia in 2024, according to Welt. - Saxony-Anhalt's domestic intelligence office classifies the state AfD as "confirmed right-wing extremist". Brandenburg's office classifies its own state party the same way, and the AfD is challenging that in court. - The CDU is Germany's main centre-right party. A resolution passed at one of its national party conferences rules out working with either the AfD or the Left Party. That policy is known as the "firewall" (Brandmauer). - The CDU had governed Saxony-Anhalt for 24 years. Its leader, Friedrich Merz, has been chancellor since 2025, in a coalition with the Social Democrats (SPD).
Who the actors are. - The AfD wants to govern alone, or with others only if they accept its programme. - The CDU says it will not deal with the AfD. Without the Left Party, it has no path to a majority of its own. - The BSW, founded by Sahra Wagenknecht in 2024 after she split from the Left Party, holds five seats. It opposes sanctions on Russia, and so does the AfD. - The SPD, the Greens and the Left all oppose the AfD.
What is at stake. A state government controls schools, policing, cultural funding and the state intelligence office. The Frankfurter Allgemeine writes that no party classified this way has held power in a German state since the Second World War.
Where it stands. No deadline exists for electing a premier. After two failed rounds of voting, a simple majority of votes cast is enough. The outgoing government stays in office until a successor is elected.
The story so far
- Police say 10,000 in Magdeburg, the organisers 20,000, Le Figaro's reporter a few thousand · 6 Sep 2026
- Welt counts 1.4 million records in the Berlin leak; FAZ measures the same haul at 5.8 terabytes · 6 Sep 2026
Earlier stories The AI Times filed on this thread.
What is being argued about
- Four words for one party: whether the far-right classification is sourced to the state agency that made it, softened to "in parts", or stated flat.
- Whether the BSW will put the AfD's Ulrich Siegmund into office, abstain, or vote for nobody.
- Whether three CDU members of the new parliament could cross to make up the AfD's missing seats.
- Whose voices are quoted: foreign politicians and a tech billionaire, or people who live in the state.
