Budapest says conduct "incompatible with diplomatic status"; Magyar Nemzet says it was to fit "the European mainstream"
Four reports carry Hungary's expulsion of ten Russian diplomats. Three of them give a reason, and no two give the same one. None says what the ten are accused of doing.
What is agreed. Hungary expelled ten Russian diplomats on 8 September. All four reports we hold put the number at ten and treat the expulsion as done. Two carry Moscow's promise of an answer — Público quotes it as "hard and painful".
Where they part is the reason, and who decided.
| The account | The reason given | Whose words |
|---|---|---|
| Hungary's foreign minister, in Público | The diplomats behaved "incompatibly with their diplomatic status". Público adds that she did not say what they did, and that the expulsion "does not presuppose a break in relations". | Quoted from the minister |
| Magyar Nemzet, a government paper | The step "was needed so that Hungary fits into the European mainstream". | The paper's own voice. No official is named for it |
| Konstantin Kosachev, Russian senator, in Telex | The European Union and NATO stand behind Budapest's decision. | Quoted. No Hungarian voice answers him in that report |
Telex's other report points at the ground the minister cited — the Vienna Convention — and asks what it covers rather than answering. It then says a Russian response is near-certain and usually reciprocal, sourcing that to nobody.
Not settled. What the ten did. Whether the reason Budapest gave is the reason it acted. Who any of the ten are: no report we hold names one, quotes the Russian embassy in Budapest, or carries a Hungarian answer to the senator's claim.
What this is about: Hungary, a European Union and NATO member that stayed closer to Moscow than any other, has thrown out ten Russian diplomats.
How it got here
- Hungary joined NATO in 1999 and the EU in 2004.
- Viktor Orbán of Fidesz was prime minister from 2010. His governments kept close ties with Moscow. Hungary buys Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline and Russian gas, and Russia's state nuclear company, Rosatom, is building the expansion of the Paks nuclear plant.
- Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022. EU sanctions on Russia need every member state to agree. Budapest repeatedly delayed or blocked sanctions packages and aid to Ukraine, and pressed for exemptions for its energy imports.
- Hungary held a parliamentary election in April 2026. The main challenger was Péter Magyar, a former Fidesz insider whose Tisza party sits with the centre-right EPP in the European Parliament. The reports we hold point to a change of government. Telex's headline quotes a Russian senator on "post-Orbán Hungary". Magyar Nemzet, a paper long aligned with Fidesz, writes of "Péter Magyar's new friends". The foreign minister Público quotes is a woman. Orbán's foreign minister was Péter Szijjártó.
The actors
- Hungary's government gave the expulsion order. It cited the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which lets a host state declare a diplomat unwelcome without giving a reason.
- Russia loses its diplomats in Budapest. Moscow has promised a response.
- The EU and NATO are the bodies the Russian senator says stand behind the decision. We hold no report that shows this.
What is at stake
- For the EU: whether a member state that often blocked Union policy on Russia is changing sides.
- For Hungary: its energy supply. Magyar Nemzet argues that a break with Moscow puts cheap oil and gas at risk.
- For Moscow: one of its last friendly capitals inside the EU.
Where it stands: The expulsion was announced on 8 September. Público quotes the minister saying it "does not presuppose a break in relations". No report we hold says what the ten are accused of. Russia's response had not been reported.
The story so far
- Le Figaro says Putin ordered a three-day halt on Kyiv. NOS says both presidents agreed one, with no end date. · 6 Sep 2026
Earlier stories The AI Times filed on this thread.
What is being argued about
- Three reasons given for one expulsion, none corroborated by a second report
- What Hungary's foreign minister said, and what she did not say
- A Russian senator's claim that the EU and NATO, not Budapest, made the decision
- Moscow's promised answer, which had not come when these reports were published
