"Ehemalige EU-Kommissarin" or the woman who "lutou pelo acesso ao aborto": papers split on who Emma Bonino was
Emma Bonino has died at 78. Three of five headlines remember a European. Two remember a campaigner for abortion and women's rights.
Five obituaries, five Boninos. Emma Bonino died on Friday, aged 78, Politico Europe, Público and NOS report. NOS says her party, Più Europa, announced it.
What the headline calls her.
| Outlet | Headline calls her | Abortion in the text we hold? |
|---|---|---|
| Frankfurter Allgemeine | "Ehemalige EU-Kommissarin" (former EU commissioner) | Yes |
| Público | politician who "lutou pelo acesso ao aborto" (fought for abortion access) | Yes |
| NOS | "voorvechter voor vrouwenrechten" (women's rights champion) | Yes |
| Politico Europe | "The Europe she fought for will miss her" | No |
| El Mundo | "Europa como vocación" (Europe as a vocation) | No |
- 3 of 5 headlines name Europe or the Commission.
- 2 of 5 name abortion or women's rights.
- 3 of 5 reports mention abortion anywhere.
Who speaks for her. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's tribute appears in 2 of 5 reports: the Frankfurter Allgemeine and NOS. NOS says their ideas were "far apart". Only NOS quotes her own party, Più Europa. It also quotes former prime minister Enrico Letta, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and the Greens' Angelo Bonelli.
What is not settled. No official cause of death has been given, NOS says. It reports she was admitted to hospital on Monday with breathing problems. We hold only the opening lines from Politico Europe and Público, and one sentence from El Mundo. Where they do not mention abortion, it may be missing from our copy, not from their article.
What this is about. Emma Bonino spent fifty years in Italian and European politics. She died in Rome on Friday at 78, and the papers that carry her obituary do not agree on which half of that career defines her.
How it got here. Abortion was a crime in Italy through the 1970s, in what NOS calls a Roman Catholic and conservative country. In 1975 Bonino said publicly that she had had an abortion, at 26, and reported herself to the police as an act of open defiance. Her arrest, NOS reports, was big news and the start of a campaign that ended in legalisation in 1978. She was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies for the Radical Party — a small party, NOS writes, that worked tirelessly on human rights — and went on to the European Parliament.
The European half followed. She was European Commissioner for humanitarian aid, fisheries and consumer protection in the late 1990s, a post in the EU's executive; Italian minister for international trade and European affairs from 2006 to 2008; and foreign minister from 2013 to 2014. She co-founded the campaign group No Peace Without Justice and, NOS reports, played a part in the Rome Statute, the treaty that created the International Criminal Court. In 2017 she founded Più Europa, a centre-left, liberal, pro-European party, which announced her death.
Who is in it. Giorgia Meloni leads Italy's government; her Brothers of Italy sits with the ECR group in the European Parliament, and NOS says her ideas and Bonino's lay far apart. Antonio Tajani, the foreign minister, is a former president of the European Parliament. Enrico Letta is a former prime minister.
What is at stake. An obituary settles which claim the record carries: a European career inside the institutions, or a campaign that changed Italian law on abortion.
Where it stands. No official cause of death has been given, NOS reports. She was admitted to hospital on Monday with breathing problems. Meloni says a state funeral is being prepared for early next week.

What is being argued about
- Which role each headline gives Bonino: the Commission, Europe, abortion or women's rights
- Her 1975 declaration of her own illegal abortion and Italy's 1978 law
- Tributes from Giorgia Meloni, a political opponent, and from her own party
- What remains unknown: the cause of death
