El Mundo says Russian strikes stopped traffic on three Kyiv bridges; Espreso names one, and a former minister says do not panic
Five reports from 1 and 2 October cover the Russian attacks on Kyiv's Dnipro bridges. They do not agree on how many bridges were hit. Only one, from Suspilne, is written from the side of the people trying to get home across the river.
What is agreed. Russian attacks have damaged Kyiv's bridges over the Dnipro, and traffic on them is restricted. Suspilne reports that the restrictions gridlocked the roads. It says people queued at bus stops to get home from the right bank to the left.
Where the accounts differ.
| Outlet | Bridges | What the story is |
|---|---|---|
| El Mundo | three, traffic stopped | "a new Russian tactic of destabilisation" |
| Espreso TV (embassies) | only the Southern Bridge named | background to embassy contingency plans |
| Espreso TV (Omelian) | no number | bridges are "extremely difficult" to destroy |
| Deník N | no number | a Russian "campaign against bridges" |
| Suspilne | no number | "no buses, no trolleybuses, the minibuses are packed" |
Who is quoted. One report gives commuters a voice. The other four quote a UN commissioner, a former infrastructure minister, two unnamed diplomats and a named foreign ministry spokesman. The former minister, Volodymyr Omelian, told Espreso: "I would definitely not panic."
What is not settled. - How many bridges were hit. The figure of three is in El Mundo's headline, and we hold only the first lines of that report. - How long the restrictions will last. No report says. - Whether anyone was hurt in the bridge strikes. No report gives a figure. - What the closures cost workers in hours or pay. No report we hold measures it.
This story is about Russia's attacks on the bridges across the Dnipro river in Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, and what they mean for the people who cross them every day.
How it got here. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and backed armed separatists in eastern Ukraine the same year. On 24 February 2022 it launched a full-scale invasion. Its push on Kyiv failed within weeks, and its forces pulled back from the area around the capital. Since then the fighting has continued along a front in the south and east. Russia has struck Ukrainian cities with missiles and drones and has repeatedly targeted power plants and other infrastructure. Ukraine has struck back inside Russia. Deník N's summary of 1 October marks the war's 1,681st day.
Why the bridges matter. The Dnipro runs through the middle of Kyiv. The historic centre and most government buildings are on the right (west) bank. Large residential districts are on the left (east) bank. Each working day, people cross by road bridge or by metro. Close the bridges and the city is cut in two, with jobs on one side and homes on the other.
The actors. - Russia carries out the strikes. El Mundo and Deník N describe them as a new move against the bridges. - Kyiv's residents depend on buses, trolleybuses, minibuses and the metro to get to work. - Ukraine's government is responsible for the capital's defence and its transport. - Western embassies reopened in Kyiv after Russian forces pulled back in 2022. Their presence is read as a sign of support for Ukraine.
What is at stake. If the crossings stay restricted, the cost falls on commuters' time and on the city's economy. Espreso's report on the embassies says diplomats fear that leaving would hand Moscow a propaganda win.
Where it stands. On 2 October traffic on the bridges was restricted. Omelian called for a ferry crossing now, tunnels in the longer run, and anti-drone barriers over the metro line.
