France 24 says two tankers were hit by a projectile or debris; Gulf News's headline says one tanker, in a 'US-Iran war'
Two reports on ships hit in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday disagree on how many were hit and on what hit them. France 24's own headline and its text do not agree either. Neither report names anyone as firing.
Two reports, three accounts. France 24's headline says a projectile hit one tanker. Its text gives UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) as the source. It says two tankers were hit "by either an \"unknown projectile\" or debris". Gulf News's headline says "Tanker hit", in the singular. We hold only that headline and none of its text.
| France 24 headline | France 24 text | Gulf News headline | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tankers hit | one | two | one |
| What hit them | a projectile | "unknown projectile" or debris | not given |
| Injured | not given | "at least two crew members" | not given |
| Source given | none | a maritime security agency | none |
| Setting | the strait | the strait | "US-Iran war" |
Who fired. Neither report names anyone as firing. Gulf News blames no one. But it files the hit under the heading "US-Iran war" and pairs it with oil falling "towards $100".
The crew. France 24, citing UKMTO, says at least two crew members were injured in the first incident. It gives no names, no nationalities and no ship names. UKMTO says both ships will continue to their next port of call.
What is not settled - One tanker or two. The count of two comes from one agency, carried by one outlet. - Whether a projectile or debris did the damage, and who fired. - Which ships were hit, under which flags, and where in the strait. - What Gulf News's own text says. We could not read it.
This story is about merchant ships being hit in the Strait of Hormuz, the sea lane that carries most of the oil leaving the Gulf.
The strait. Hormuz is the narrow channel between Iran to the north and Oman to the south. It joins the Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the open ocean. Tankers from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Iran all pass through it. Trouble there moves oil prices everywhere.
How it got here. Iran and the United States have been adversaries since Iran's 1979 revolution. In 2015 Iran accepted limits on its nuclear programme in return for sanctions relief. The US left that deal in 2018 and reimposed sanctions. In 2019 several tankers were damaged near the strait. Washington blamed Iran, and Iran denied it. Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023, and war in Gaza followed. Groups aligned with Iran then widened the fight, and Yemen's Houthis attacked shipping in the Red Sea. Iran and Israel struck each other directly in 2024. In June 2025 Israel attacked Iran, the US bombed Iranian nuclear sites, and a ceasefire followed. Gulf News now files Monday's incident under "US-Iran war". The two reports we hold do not say how that fighting began or where it stands.
The actors. Iran borders the strait, and its officials have for years threatened to close it. The US Navy's Fifth Fleet is based in Bahrain and has patrolled these waters for decades. UKMTO is a British military office that takes reports from merchant ships in the region and warns other ships.
What is at stake. If ships stop moving through Hormuz, oil and gas supplies tighten worldwide. Gulf News's headline has oil falling "towards $100".
Where it stands. Two reports were published six minutes apart on Monday afternoon. One says two ships were hit. The other's headline says one. Neither says who fired.
