Guardian says up to 169 killed and the Houthis consolidating; Asharq Al-Awsat says Taiz and Bab al-Mandab are curbing them

One report we hold carries a toll, and its two attributed counts add to 154, not 169. The Saudi-owned paper's headline has the advance being checked. UN News gives no number at all.

Taiz Battles and Bab al-Mandab Curb Houthi Push Eastward
Taiz Battles and Bab al-Mandab Curb Houthi Push Eastward as published by Asharq Al-Awsat · seen at Asharq Al-Awsat

The toll. Only one report we hold carries any death toll. The Guardian's headline gives "Up to 169 killed in Yemen"; its body attributes at least 118 dead to Houthi military officials — killed in clashes and in Saudi air and artillery strikes on Taiz, al-Jawf, Marib and Saada since Sunday, via Agence France-Presse — and at least 36 to Yemeni government sources, on their own side. Those add to 154. No source is given for 169.

The front. The Guardian has the Iran-aligned Houthis seeking "to consolidate territorial gains" against Saudi-backed government forces. Asharq Al-Awsat's headline says the opposite: "Taiz Battles and Bab al-Mandab Curb Houthi Push Eastward". We hold that headline and no text beneath it.

Report On the toll On the front
The Guardian up to 169, from two attributed counts Houthis consolidating gains
Asharq Al-Awsat none the push eastward is being curbed
UN News none hostilities worsening, no party named

Displacement. The Guardian reports thousands fleeing the violence; UN News reports the UN refugee agency warning on Tuesday that more people are fleeing their homes. Two accounts, no number.

What is not settled. Who holds the heights above the coast. Where 169 comes from. How many people have fled, and from where. And none of the three reports names a single person killed.

What this is about. A three-day battle for high ground on Yemen's Red Sea coast, above the sea lane that carries traffic to the Suez Canal.

How it got here. Yemen's Houthi movement took the capital, Sanaa, in September 2014 and forced out the internationally recognised government. In March 2015 a military coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened on that government's side. The country has been divided since: Houthi authorities govern the north-west, including Sanaa; the recognised government and its allies hold much of the south and east, including Marib. Taiz, Yemen's third city, has been a front line for most of a decade. From late 2023 the Houthis attacked shipping in the Red Sea, saying they were acting over the war in Gaza, and many shipping lines rerouted around Africa instead.

Who the actors are. The Houthis, described by the Guardian as Iran-aligned. The recognised Yemeni government, described by the Guardian as Saudi-backed. Saudi Arabia, whose air and artillery strikes on Taiz, al-Jawf, Marib and Saada are cited in the Guardian's report by Houthi military officials. And UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, whose job is to protect and to count people forced from home; UN News reports it warning on Tuesday that more Yemenis are fleeing.

What is at stake. Bab al-Mandab is the strait between Yemen and the Horn of Africa joining the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden — the only sea route to Suez. The Yemeni shore overlooks it, so who holds the heights above that coast is a question about the strait as well as about the war.

Where it stands. Two accounts of which way the front is moving, one death toll from one report, and no count of the displaced.

What is being argued about

  • Whether up to 169 people were killed in three days, when the two attributed counts add to 154
  • Which side is gaining ground on the Red Sea coast
  • How many people the fighting has driven from home — no report we hold gives a number
  • Who is named as doing the killing, and who is merely reported dead

The bias in this coverageBias

Three counts, and the two smaller ones do not reach the largest

One report leads on up to 169 dead in three days, then gives 118 claimed by one side's military officials and 36 by the other's government sources — which add to 154. The 15-death gap is not explained. Nobody killed is named in any of the three reports.

1 reports carrying a death toll 2 sides whose toll comes from their own officials 15 gap between the headline figure and the two attributed tolls 0 dead named in any report

Fighting, with almost nobody fighting

Two of the three reports describe the violence without naming a belligerent: in one, battles and a strait do the curbing; in the other, hostilities worsen on their own and people flee. Only the longest report says who is firing, and it names both parties by their foreign backers rather than by themselves.

3 reports in the story 1 reports naming who is firing 1 reports naming a party by its foreign backer
Scored without the mastheads. Where the two passes differ, both are kept.

misleading As many as 169 people have been killed in Yemen in the three days to 22 September.

The only account saying the Houthi advance eastward is being checked, at Taiz and at Bab al-Mandab — and we hold its headline with no text behind it.
Yemeni government forces intensified airstrikes on Houthi positions, fortifications, and reinforcements in Taiz Governorate in southwestern Yemen on Tuesday, as fighting continued on several fronts. The forces said they had retaken positions in the south and west of the governorate, shot down two drones, and captured several members of the group near Bab al-Mandab. The Taiz Military Axis, affiliated with the Yemeni armed forces, said warplanes carried out five airstrikes on Houthi positions, gatherings, and vehicles on the Al-Ahkoum front in Hayfan District, southeast of the governorate. The only report we hold with any death toll, and the only one that names who is firing — both sides' counts attributed to their own officials.
As many as 169 people have been reportedly killed in Yemen in the last three days as Iran-aligned Houthis battle Saudi-backed government forces for control of strategic heights on the Red Sea coast, while thousands flee the violence. Houthi military officials said at least 118 people had been killed in clashes, as well as Saudi air and artillery strikes on Taiz, al-Jawf, Marib and Saada provinces since Sunday, Agence France-Presse reported. Yemeni government sources have said at least 36 people have been killed on their side of the conflict.
Which measure was chosen: the headline takes the highest available figure; the two attributed tolls in the body add to 154, not 169, and the gap is not explained — “Up to 169 killed in Yemen as Houthis battle for strategic Red Sea heights”
Who is named as acting: the dead are killed by no one; the count is reported without an actor and at two removes — “As many as 169 people have been reportedly killed in Yemen in the last three days”
Whose voice is quoted: each side's toll is attributed to that side's own officials, symmetrically, and neither is stated flat — “Houthi military officials said at least 118 people had been killed in clashes as well as Saudi air and artillery strikes on Taiz, al-Jawf, Marib and Saada provinces since Sunday, Agence France-Presse reported.”
How the parties are labelled: both belligerents are identified by a foreign backer rather than by themselves, in the same sentence — “Thousands flee fighting as Iran-aligned group seeks to consolidate territorial gains against Saudi-backed government forces”
Headline figure: the headline carries a total no source gives — the sum of two rival tolls, hedged only in the body — “Up to 169 killed in Yemen as Houthis battle for strategic Red Sea heights”
