Le Figaro says Iran has sent its conditions for Hormuz; Reuters says the two are only trading threats
Seven reports on one shut strait, and four words for what is happening in it: conditions, ideas, threats, "very big things". None names a barrel price or a date for reopening.
Four words for one closed strait. Le Figaro carries Iran's chief negotiator and parliament speaker — given by office, never by name — saying that until "les engagements américains" are respected "il sera impossible de revenir" to the situation before the talks and before Hormuz was open. Al-Modon reports Qatar's foreign ministry exchanging "أفكاراً ورؤى مختلفة" on resuming Washington–Tehran talks. Reuters says the two are trading threats after Houthi attacks. Ukrinform and Censor.NET carry one Trump remark in two renderings.

One report reaches a price. An-Nahar quotes Neel Kashkari of the Minneapolis Federal Reserve backing last week's unanimous quarter-point rise to a 3.75–4.00 percent range, and saying inflation is high across the economy even with energy and food stripped out — both, he says, sectors that matter enormously. Interest rates, he adds, cannot open the strait or bring oil down. That rise is the only figure in the story.
What is not settled. No report we hold says what Iran's conditions are. Neither Ukrainian report says where Trump spoke. An-Nahar states, sourced to nobody, that the United States and Iran both attacked and sank tankers in the strait and that Saudi Arabia closed its East–West pipeline; no other report we hold carries either. Nobody prices a barrel. Nobody gives a date.
What this is about. The Strait of Hormuz is the only sea way in and out of the Gulf — Iran along the north shore, Oman and the United Arab Emirates on the south — and it is the route by which the oil the Gulf states sell leaves. It is shut, and today's reports are about who can reopen it and on what terms.
How it got here. The United States and Iran have had no diplomatic relations since 1980, after the 1979 revolution and the seizure of the US embassy in Tehran. In 2015 Iran and six governments signed a nuclear agreement trading limits on Iran's programme for sanctions relief; the United States left it in 2018 under President Trump and reimposed sanctions. Talks to put something in its place have opened and collapsed repeatedly since. Iran has for decades answered pressure on its oil exports by threatening the strait. Since the Gaza war that followed the attacks of 7 October 2023, Yemen's Houthi movement has attacked shipping in the region, saying it acts over Gaza; Reuters ties today's exchange of threats to Houthi attacks it says worsened the regional conflict. The reports we hold describe the United States and Iran as at war.
Who is in it. Iran holds the coast. The United States is the other party. Qatar hosts American forces and has mediated between the two for years, which is why Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, stopped there on Sunday on his way to the UN General Assembly in New York. Saudi Arabia is in it because its East–West pipeline is the one overland route around the strait. The US Federal Reserve is in it because a closed oil route is a price before it is anything else, and the Fed's mandate is to return inflation to 2 percent.
What is at stake. Reopened, the Gulf's oil sails again. Shut, it does not — and as the one central banker quoted here says, no rate decision changes that.

What is being argued about
- Whether the closed strait is a negotiation or a countdown
- What Iran's conditions for reopening actually are — no report says
- Who gets quoted: four American voices, one Iranian, nobody outside government
- What a shut oil route costs a household, and who is asked
