Morning Star says a "gift", the Guardian says "trousering", the Independent says it "could be illegal"

Two donations of £36m each landed on Reform UK over one weekend. Eight reports, and they do not agree on what to call the money or which question it raises.

The number is not in dispute. The Guardian, the Morning Star and the Independent each give the same two donations to Reform UK — £36m from Ben Delo, £36m matched by Christopher Harborne the next day. £72m in a weekend. No report we hold gives a different figure.

The word for it is.

Report What it calls the £72m
The Guardian, news "new donations", and asks how Reform could spend them
The Guardian, John Crace "trousering £72m"
Morning Star, news a "gift" in Farage's mouth, a "pledge" in the campaigners'
Morning Star, editorial "sums donated … by two super-rich cryptocurrency speculators"
The Independent money that "could be illegal under Labour's new rules"

Who gets to answer. The critics are named: Transparency International UK's Duncan Hames, Green deputy leader Rachel Millward, a Labour spokesperson. Reform's reply is two words of thanks from Nigel Farage in one report and an unnamed "source close to Mr Farage" in another. Neither donor answers the criticism anywhere in what we hold.

Not settled. Whether Angela Rayner said a cap could act retrospectively. That word sits in the Independent, in a line introducing its own video; the Morning Star, on the same interview, has her going no further than "It's not as simple as we're saying we won't put a cap." Nor is the second donor's name stable — one Guardian link reads "Ben Zelo" where its own body, and the Morning Star, write Ben Delo.

What this is about. Two men who made fortunes in cryptocurrency gave Nigel Farage's Reform UK £72m over one weekend, at the moment the government was saying it might cap political donations.

How it got here. British party funding has no ceiling. Under the law as it stands, a donation of any size is lawful if the donor is on a UK electoral register or is a UK-registered company, and the party reports it to the Electoral Commission. Size has never been the test; permissibility and disclosure are. That is what Labour, in office since the 2024 general election, has been proposing to change — and the Independent reports that the new donations "could be illegal under Labour's new rules."

Christopher Harborne, who the Morning Star reports is based in Thailand, was already Farage's backer: the Guardian notes an earlier £5m gift so unconditional that Farage said he could spend it on Ferraris. Then, over the weekend of 12–13 September 2026, Ben Delo gave £36m and Harborne matched it the next day — because of his "competitive spirit," he told reporters. The same week, Housing Secretary Angela Rayner suggested a cap was being considered.

Who is in it. Delo and Harborne, the donors, neither of whom has answered the criticism in any report we hold. Farage and Reform, the recipients. The Labour government, which writes the rules and is itself funded by donations. Transparency International UK and the Green Party, arguing the money buys influence. The Electoral Commission, which registers donations rather than blocking them.

What turns on it. A UK general election must be held by 2029, so money banked now can be spent over years. If a cap passes and bites only in future, the £72m is safe. If it reaches backwards — the point the reports disagree about — it may not. Labour's own donors would face any new limit too, which is why the Independent's David Maddox calls the crackdown "a bid to save democracy – and itself."

Where it stands. No cap exists in law. The money is in.

What is being argued about

  • Two donations of £36m each to Reform UK, and the four different words the reports use for the same money
  • Whether a cap on political donations could reach money already given
  • Who is quoted answering the criticism, and who is never quoted at all
  • Nigel Farage's 2022 remarks about Russians moving assets into crypto

Four words for one transfer of money

The same £72m is a donation, a gift, a pledge and something trousered, depending on the report. Two of the reports we hold are signed comment and one is an editorial, and all three are about what the money means rather than what it is; the donors' own stated reason — matching a rival's sum out of "competitive spirit" — appears in one report.

Who gets to answer

Reform's side is put by an unnamed source close to the leader in one report and by a two-word quote of thanks in another; the accusations are put by named spokespeople, a named campaign director and a named deputy party leader. One report states it asked Reform for comment. No report carries a response from either donor to the criticism.

Claims and verdicts

true Reform UK received £72m in two donations of £36m each, from Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne.
The Guardian, the Morning Star and the Independent each give the same two sums and the same two donors, with the Morning Star adding that Harborne cited his "competitive spirit" in matching Delo's gift of the previous day. No report we hold gives a different figure.

Puts the test the other way round: what Reform would be saying if Labour or the Tories were "trousering £72m" from the same two men.
You wait years for one party donation of £36m and then two come along at once. Reform can hardly believe its luck. All hail the crypto billionaires. Tacky pale turquoise suits all round. And Nigel Farage won’t have to worry about spending any of his own money – if you can call the £5m freebie his own money – on his security. Nor do those champagne and oyster lunches to discuss loose change donations of £500k from people living overseas pay for themselves. From now on Reform won’t need to bother getting out of bed for anything less than eight figures. Fair to say that if it had been Labour or t
What the money is called: the verb chosen for receiving the money carries the judgement — “if it had been Labour or the Tories trousering £72m from Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo then Reform would be on full outrage rampage”
The donors' purpose stated as a rhetorical: asserted through the question form — “Who wouldn’t want a country where two billionaires can attempt to buy the democratic process?”

The only report that asks what the £72m can actually be spent on, and the only one that scales it — nearly enough for a branded Ferrari for an organiser in each of Britain's 632 constituencies.
Nigel Farage once said he could spend his £5m gift from Christopher Harborne on Ferraris if he wanted to, given its unconditional nature. With the new donations to his party from Harborne and his fellow crypto billionaire Ben Delo of £72m over the past weekend alone, Farage’s party now has nearly enough cash to buy a Reform UK branded Ferrari for a party organiser in each of Britain’s 632 constituencies (though that would certainly be a waste and a bit of a tax headache).
Which measure was chosen: the sum is scaled against sports cars per constituency rather than against campaign spending limits — “Farage’s party now has nearly enough cash to buy a Reform UK branded Ferrari for a party organiser in each of Britain’s 632 constituencies”
