Agreed. Devices have been found at high-voltage lines in North Rhine-Westphalia, Brandenburg and Saxony — 21 in Saxony alone, the authorities told Welt, all defused by state police specialists. On Monday police searched near a substation between Remscheid and Wuppertal, a helicopter overhead. The man is not in custody.

What the devices did. Three reports say in one sentence that the attack near Bergheim shut down several blocks of a power station and that nobody lost supply. Welt and the SZ call the attack at Jänschwalde in Brandenburg „erfolgreich“ and do not say what followed. About 90 Berlin traffic lights failed after a substation explosion; the operator 50Hertz and the police call that a technical fault, Welt reports.

Not settled. Whether the person seen with a rucksack at Remscheid is the man sought: „Das wissen wir erst, wenn wir die Person antreffen“, a Wuppertal police spokesman said. Whether he acted alone: Dobrindt says a lone actor; taz alone writes that he may not be acting alone, or that someone else may be laying a false trail. No report we hold names anyone hurt.

What this is. Police in Germany are hunting a man they say tried to short-circuit high-voltage power lines near lignite (brown coal) mines. The papers also disagree on what to call him.

How it got here. - Germany still mines and burns lignite in two main areas. One is the Rhineland, west of Cologne in North Rhine-Westphalia. The other is Lusatia, in southern Brandenburg and eastern Saxony. Every site in this story is near one of them. - In 2020 the Bundestag passed a law ending coal power by 2038 at the latest. North Rhine-Westphalia and the operator RWE later agreed to end it in the Rhineland by 2030. Climate groups say this is still too slow. - The Hambach Forest, beside the Hambach mine, became the symbol of that fight. For years activists lived in tree houses there to stop it being cut down. A court stopped the clearing in 2018, and the forest was later spared. Police searched the forest on Sunday 6 September, after the suspect's converted lorry was found nearby. - The hunt began after the first attack, on the evening of Tuesday 1 September. Handwritten letters claiming the attacks then reached several newsrooms, including taz. One reads: „Stromerzeugung aus fossilen Brennstoffen ist ein Verbrechen.“ Investigators say the letters are genuine.

Who is involved. - Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), the federal interior minister. He calls it „Klimaterrorismus“ by a man acting alone. - Herbert Reul (CDU), interior minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, where most of the search has taken place. - State police and prosecutors in three Länder. In Germany, policing is run by the states, not by Berlin. - 50Hertz, which runs the high-voltage grid in eastern Germany, including Berlin.

Why the name matters. Germany's press code advises papers not to print a suspect's full name. The usual form is a first name and an initial, which is how taz names him.

What is at stake. The grid supplies hospitals as well as homes, as Reul pointed out. How the case is labelled also matters: if it is treated as terrorism, that changes both how it is prosecuted and how it is argued about in public.

Where it stands. In the reports we hold, which run to 7 September, the man has not been found.
