The Independent says Bartiromo was 'fired'; her attorney, in the same report, says she was not
Two reports, three words for one event — fired, firing, ouster — and neither names anyone at Fox News as having decided.
The claim and its denial, one line apart. The Independent's headline says Maria Bartiromo "was fired from Fox News for 'leaking info to Trump'". The single line beneath it says an attorney for Bartiromo "has denied that she was fired". Both sentences sit in the same report.
The other report we hold. MSNBC's headline says the White House "pressed Fox News on Maria Bartiromo's firing, deeming it 'unacceptable'". The linked headline carried inside the same report says "ouster". MSNBC names Peter Navarro as saying on the record that Fox "just isn't 'friendly' enough to Donald Trump and MAGA" — and writes that he "whined" it.

Not settled. Whether she was dismissed or left. Neither report names an executive, a board or a manager as having decided — one writes it in the passive, the other as a bare noun. Neither quotes her. Neither says what she is alleged to have leaked, or who says she leaked it. We hold no statement from Fox News. The denial is sourced to a lawyer; the assertion it denies is sourced to nobody.
What this is about. A veteran business-television anchor is out at Fox News, and the two reports we hold cannot agree on whether she was dismissed or left of her own accord.
How it got here. Maria Bartiromo has anchored financial news in the United States since the 1990s, first at CNBC, reporting from the New York Stock Exchange, and from 2013 at Fox Business Network — The Independent calls her "a longtime Fox Business anchor". Fox Business and Fox News are sister channels of Fox Corporation, controlled by the Murdoch family, and are the American cable outlets most closely identified with the political right. Donald Trump won the 2024 election and returned to the presidency in January 2025; his administration deals daily with the channel its supporters watch. That is the setting for the two claims in today's reports: The Independent's headline says Bartiromo was fired "for 'leaking info to Trump'", and an attorney for her, in the same report, denies she was fired at all.
Who is in it. Bartiromo, who has not spoken in anything we hold. Her attorney, the only named source on either side. Fox News and Fox Business, which have issued no statement we hold. The White House, which MSNBC says "pressed" Fox over the departure and called it "unacceptable". Peter Navarro, Trump's trade adviser, the one person quoted on the record — saying Fox "just isn't 'friendly' enough" to Trump and MAGA, the movement named for his campaign slogan. And two outlets on opposite sides: The Independent, a British paper, and MSNBC, whose blog now publishes as MS NOW and which is Fox News's main cable rival.
What is at stake. Whether a sitting government's displeasure moved a broadcaster's staffing, or whether an anchor left and a rival network built a story on it. The two versions differ on the facts, not the framing.
Where it stands. No employer account. No word from Bartiromo. A denial from her lawyer, and an assertion attributed to no one.
