UK monitor names no attacker for three ships hit in Hormuz; the Revolutionary Guard says it clashes there 'every 24 hours'
A British maritime monitor says an oil tanker, a cargo ship and a gas carrier were hit by "unspecified projectiles". In the same article, Iran's Revolutionary Guard says its forces target small vessels in the strait. No report links the two.
Three ships, no attacker. The UK Maritime Trade Operations centre (UKMTO) says an oil tanker, a cargo ship and a liquefied gas carrier were hit by "unspecified projectiles" crossing the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday. It got the report late, gave no details and named no one, An-Nahar says. LBCI carries the same notice: one account, told twice.
The Guard's claim. In the same An-Nahar article, the Revolutionary Guard says Iran is "still in a state of war". It says the strait sees clashes "every 24 hours" and Iranian forces target small vessels trying to cross, "while Washington does not respond". No report we hold ties this to the three ships.
Two other readings. Al Jazeera English says crude flows through Hormuz "have recovered", naming no source, but insurance costs and risk still block normal traffic. Shargh reports Iraq's parliament speaker saying Iran did not exempt Iraqi ships from its shipping ban.
| Who | Says | Names who fired? |
|---|---|---|
| UKMTO, via An-Nahar and LBCI | 3 ships hit | No |
| Revolutionary Guard, via An-Nahar | clashes every 24 hours | Its own forces; no ship named |
| Al Jazeera English | crude flows recovered | Does not mention the strikes |
| Iraq's speaker, via Shargh | Iraqi ships not exempted | — |
What is not settled - Who fired on the three ships, and whether anyone aboard was hurt. - Whether the Guard's daily clashes include these ships. - How much traffic is moving, when Iraq says the ban still covers its ships. - We hold no account from Washington, Oman or the shipowners.
This story is about merchant ships being hit in the Strait of Hormuz, and who is firing.
The strait. Hormuz is the narrow sea passage between Iran and Oman, the Gulf's only route to the open ocean. Oil and gas from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and Iran leave through it. When traffic there slows, energy prices move worldwide.
How it got here. Iran and Israel have been escalating since the war in Gaza that followed the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023. In June 2025 Israel and Iran fought a direct war, and the United States bombed Iranian nuclear sites. Iran and the United States are now at war. An-Nahar reports the Revolutionary Guard saying Iran is "still in a state of war", and President Donald Trump saying the war will end soon. Shargh reports that Iran has banned shipping through the strait.
The talks. Last week, at the UN General Assembly, Iran proposed a seven-day countdown to reopen the strait and end the war, An-Nahar reports. Trump rejected the plan on Saturday. Qatar carries messages between the two sides, and Iran says Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has received a US reply.
The actors. - The Revolutionary Guard is a branch of Iran's armed forces, set up after the 1979 revolution. It has its own navy in the Gulf. - UKMTO is a British Royal Navy centre. Merchant ships report incidents to it, and it warns other ships. - Iraq ships most of its oil from Gulf ports near Basra, so its tankers must cross Hormuz. Baghdad has close ties to both Tehran and Washington. - The United States is fighting Iran and says Iran must not get a nuclear weapon.
What is at stake. While ships are being hit, insurance stays costly and traffic stays below normal, Al Jazeera English says. A deal to reopen the strait would ease that.
Where it stands. No one has been named as firing on Tuesday's three ships. Tehran has the US reply.
