Ruslan Kravchenko quit as Ukraine's prosecutor general on the evening of 7 September, calling it "a political decision". Of the 16 reports we hold, three lead not on the resignation but on a Russian police database card.

The resignation. Ruslan Kravchenko submitted his resignation as Ukraine's prosecutor general late on 7 September. Espreso carries his Telegram post: "This is a political decision. And I took it consciously." He added that his "position on the accusations remains unchanged".

What preceded it. Ukraine's anti-corruption bureau, NABU, and the anti-corruption prosecutors said on 4 September they had broken up a group shielding fraudulent call centres, headed from inside the prosecutor general's office by Serhiy Kropyva. Espreso puts it at more than 30 million hryvnia and five people charged. On the afternoon of 7 September Kravchenko told journalists he would not resign of his own accord.

Not settled. Whether Russia has re-listed him: three reports carry it, all three reading the same database card, and no Ukrainian report we hold mentions it. What the meeting of Zelensky, Kravchenko and Arakhamia decided: Ukrainska Pravda's sources say it happened; nobody in it has spoken. And what the investigators say — no report we hold quotes them.

What this is about. Ukraine's chief prosecutor resigned after anti-corruption investigators accused one of his senior staff of taking money to protect fraudulent call centres.

How it got here. - 2014–2016. After the Maidan protests of 2014, Ukraine set up two independent anti-corruption bodies. The National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) investigates. The Specialised Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAP) prosecutes. The EU and other Western partners pressed for both and treat them as a test of reform. - February 2022. Russia's full-scale invasion began. The war itself began in 2014. Ukraine applied to join the EU that year. - June 2025. Ruslan Kravchenko, formerly head of the tax service, became prosecutor general. Ukrainska Pravda calls him the youngest in the country's history. Under Ukraine's constitution, the president appoints and dismisses the prosecutor general with parliament's consent. - July 2025. Parliament passed a law that curbed the independence of NABU and SAP. Street protests and criticism from the EU followed, and parliament reversed the law. MP Andriy Osadchuk told Espreso that the reversal still gave the prosecutor general new powers to appoint prosecutors himself. - Since then. The public has complained more and more about fraudulent call centres that defraud Ukrainians and Europeans. Ukrainska Pravda's sources say they could not operate without protection from law enforcement.

The actors. - NABU and SAP: they ran the operation, named "Carthage". - Serhiy Kropyva: a deputy department head in the prosecutor general's office and the main suspect. - President Volodymyr Zelensky: he chose Kravchenko. - Davyd Arakhamia: he leads Zelensky's Servant of the People party in parliament. Ukrainska Pravda's sources say he opposed the resignation. - Russia: Maria Zakharova speaks for its foreign ministry. Its interior ministry keeps a wanted database that lists Kravchenko, who was born in Sievierodonetsk in the Luhansk region.

What is at stake. The prosecutor general's office handles cases against MPs. It also documents Russian war crimes. Osadchuk told Espreso the scandal comes just as Ukraine has opened its first cluster of EU accession talks, on rule of law. Whether Kravchenko himself faces suspicion is open.

Where it stands. The resignation was submitted on 7 September. We hold no report of a parliamentary vote, a successor, or any statement by the investigators since.
