What every report agrees on. Vilnius airport suspended takeoffs and landings on Sunday and NATO fighters were put up after radar showed a possible drone near the capital. Espreso TV and Ukrainska Pravda, both citing Delfi, and Life.ru all carry it. Espreso TV alone names the aircraft: Italian Eurofighter Typhoons flown from the base at Šiauliai.

The one explanation on offer comes from Lithuania's National Crisis Management Centre, quoted by Espreso TV: "On radar screens the silhouettes of birds and drones are very similar, so establishing the circumstances needs a further check."

Not settled. Which account is right. We hold The Insider's headline with no text behind it, and no report that carries both versions. Nobody publishes a radar track, a recovered object, or a Lithuanian military statement naming what crossed the border — only the army's word, at 13:37, that the threat had passed.

What this is about. For about half an hour on Sunday afternoon, Lithuania's capital was warned that a drone might be overhead — text alerts, an airport shut, NATO fighters in the air — and there is now no agreement about what the radar had actually found.

How it got here. Lithuania left the Soviet Union in 1990 and joined NATO and the European Union in 2004. It borders Belarus to the east and Kaliningrad to the west — a piece of Russia with no land link to the rest of it, wedged between Lithuania and Poland. The Baltic states keep no fighter force of their own, so allied air forces have policed their skies in rotation from the base at Šiauliai since they joined. Espreso TV reports that the mission was renamed an air defence mission in July, and that Italian Eurofighter Typhoons fly it now.

Russia has been at war with Ukraine since 2014 and launched the full-scale invasion in February 2022, partly from Belarus, which remains Moscow's closest ally. Long-range drones are an everyday weapon in that war, and they do not always stop at the border. Espreso TV notes that a drone came down near the Lithuania–Belarus border in March, after which Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė convened the national security commission. On 9 September this paper reported a straight contradiction between Russian and Ukrainian outlets over whose drones had strayed and what had pushed them off course.

Who is in it. Lithuania's army and its National Crisis Management Centre issue the warnings and the all-clear. NATO supplies the aircraft. Belarus and Kaliningrad are the directions the morning object is said to have flown between.

What is at stake. A flock of birds is an embarrassment and a lesson about radar. An unexplained drone crossing a member state end to end is a violation of NATO airspace, and the alliance would have to decide what to do about it. Each reading also trains the public in whether to believe the next alert.

Where it stands. The army lifted the warning at 13:37 and the airport reopened. Nothing we hold says what crossed.
