Vedomosti says almost 10,000 drones were shot down near Moscow; the mayor's own words say 9,994 'flew towards' it
Moscow's mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, counted 9,994 drones heading for the Moscow region between 1 September and 5 October. Five Russian reports carried his figure within 20 minutes. They disagree on the dates, on the verb and on how many were shot down. No report we hold carries a Ukrainian figure.
The figure. Sobyanin wrote on his channel in the MAX messenger: «В период с 08:30 1 сентября по 08:30 5 октября в сторону Московского региона летело 9994 БПЛА». In English: 9,994 drones "flew towards" the region from 1 September to 5 October. He said most were neutralised far out. Regnum and Interfax quote this sentence word for word.
Five reports, three verbs.
| Outlet | Headline verb | Period | Who launched |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regnum (14:21) | flew towards | 1 Sep–5 Oct | Ukraine's armed forces, in the text |
| Regnum (14:07) | launched at Moscow | 1 Sep–5 Oct | Ukraine's armed forces |
| Life.ru | flew towards; the text says launched | from 1 Sep | Ukrainian military |
| Interfax | flew towards | 1–5 Oct in the headline; 1 Sep in its quote | not named |
| Vedomosti | shot down | "a month" | not named |
The dates. Interfax's headline and opening line say 1 to 5 October. The quote it prints says 1 September. The headline squeezes the same number into four days instead of 34.
The number shot down. Only Interfax gives one: almost 900 shot down on the approach to the capital. It does not say who gave that figure. Vedomosti's headline makes every drone a drone shot down, and we hold only its headline.
What is not settled - The count has one source: the mayor. No report we hold checks it. - How many drones were destroyed in total. "Most" is not a number. - Ukraine's account. None of the five reports carries one, and we hold no Ukrainian report on this figure.
What this is about. Moscow's mayor has given a count of drones aimed at the Moscow region over five weeks, and Russian outlets reported it in different ways.
How it got here. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. Fighting began that year in eastern Ukraine's Donbas region, between Ukrainian forces and separatists backed by Russia. On 24 February 2022 Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The war is now fought with long-range strikes as well as on the front lines. Russia fires missiles and drones at Ukrainian cities and power plants. Ukraine has built long-range drones of its own. Since 2023 it has flown them at targets deep inside Russia, including the Moscow region.
The actors. - Sergei Sobyanin has been mayor of Moscow since 2010. He posts counts of the drones heading for the capital. - Russia's air defences are run by the defence ministry. Their job is to stop drones before they reach the city. - Ukraine's armed forces launch the long-range drones. None of the reports we hold quotes them. - The four outlets are all Russian: Regnum, Interfax, Life.ru and Vedomosti. Regnum filed twice.
What is at stake. A count of drones launched measures how far Ukraine can reach. A count of drones shot down measures how well Russia defends its capital. The two numbers mean different things. A headline that swaps one for the other changes what a reader takes away.
Where it stands. On 5 October the mayor published a single total of 9,994 for 1 September to 5 October. In the text we hold, he gave no total for drones destroyed. None of the reports we hold gives an independent count.

What is being argued about
- Did 9,994 drones fly towards the Moscow region, or were almost 10,000 shot down?
- Did the count cover 34 days or four?
- Where does Interfax's 'almost 900 downed' come from?
- What Ukraine says about the same period: no report we hold carries it
