Vot Tak and Regnum say two dead in Nizhnekamsk; Interfax and Life.ru report only the hurt, "from 12 to 14"

Two dead, or none reported. Vot Tak, citing Nizhnekamsk mayor Radmir Belyaev, reported two people killed on 13 September. Regnum, citing the press service of the head of Tatarstan, also reports two dead. Interfax and Life.ru, sourcing that same press service within the same hour, carry only the injured and no death toll.

One source, three reports. The figure of 14 hurt, three of them in hospital, comes from that one press service in all three. Tatarstan's health minister Almir Abashev, quoted by Regnum, adds that two of the injured are in a serious condition.

Named and unnamed. Two of the six reports name Ukraine's drones. Four write the attack with no actor named in the sentence. None of the six names either of the dead: the officials are named in full, the dead are a number, and no resident is quoted anywhere.

Not settled. Whose drones. No report attaches a source to that attribution, and we hold no Ukrainian statement claiming or denying the strike. Nor the hour: Vot Tak puts the attack at night, Life.ru in the morning, and neither says which. Nor whether anyone counted the 14 independently of the press service that issued it.

What this is about. A drone attack on 13 September 2026 on Nizhnekamsk, an industrial city in Tatarstan — a republic inside the Russian Federation, on the Volga, far from Ukraine and far from the front — and a split among Russian-language outlets over whether anyone was killed.

How it got here. Russia's war against Ukraine began in 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea and fighting broke out in the Donbas. On 24 February 2022 Russia invaded across the whole country, and the war has run since. Ukraine cannot match Russian air power, so it has built long-range drones and flown them ever deeper into Russian territory — first the border regions, then cities hundreds of kilometres behind them. Kyiv says it aims at the refineries, fuel plants and airfields that keep the invasion supplied. Moscow calls the same strikes attacks on civilians: Russia's state agency TASS used the phrase "deliberate attacks on civilian infrastructure" the day before this one, as we reported on 12 September. Which description fits any given strike is disputed, and nothing we hold settles it here. Nizhnekamsk is a petrochemical town — its hockey club is called Neftekhimik, "the petrochemist", and Vot Tak reports a drone came down near its arena.

Who is involved. Ukraine, unnamed in four of the six reports and named in two. Tatarstan's own government, which is where every figure in this story starts: the press service of the head of the republic, mayor Radmir Belyaev, health minister Almir Abashev. And the outlets themselves — Russian state and Moscow-based agencies on one side, Vot Tak, published outside Russia, on the other.

What is at stake. Whether a war fought on Ukrainian soil is now killing people in ordinary Russian cities, and whether anyone outside the regional government can check what it says happened.
